Petrol in a Diesel Car in Muirhead

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Muirhead and the remainder of South Ayrshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Contact us before anything else happens, so you'll know what happens from there.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And having started, never believe it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and our team would sooner get to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Esk Road, put your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Keep your location prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts KA10 7 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and if your car has fired. Those three details settle the full visit.

Don't take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the road in, and the drive back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf at Barassie whilst the work goes on, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at The Co-operative Food now. Time gone by isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through — that's the full mechanism. It explains the ordinary Troon Darley call too: a diesel Peugeot 308 that drove out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked near Loans Village Hall. For a diesel Nissan Qashqai whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just the tank drained.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then ring us about the Audi A4, the diesel one, near War Memorial. Don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost no one can two days into a motor, and it is something our technicians establish on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Muirhead

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A fair share of this job is done at a forecourt, since that's where it usually kicks off. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's permission, that's a spot we work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car sits.

The attendants will generally help you move the car out from the pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Firing the car for four car lengths? Don't.

Muirhead plus the places beside it

Being a residential suburb, Muirhead has a regular visit, while the areas close by come along on the same trip: Barassie and Collennan, Loans and Laigh Hillhouse, Troon.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and most locations across South Ayrshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Phone to enquire instead of presuming, above all if you are on the border or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

The ground this page spans sits on this map. Your vehicle never needs to come to us. We work across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the roadside somewhere in Muirhead?

Not everybody has the chance to stop somewhere safe. If you realised after setting off and landed on the verge on Deveron Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the car or move clear of it hangs on if being in it looks sensible. Don't fire it up to reach a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the system. We'll send the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 10 miles from Muirhead, your M77 is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't restart the car to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring differs.

Where's Muirhead?

Muirhead is a coastal suburban area in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Barassie and Troon. Muirhead lies at a low elevation of around 13 metres, close to the shore of the Firth of Clyde. Muirhead has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent in the area. Muirhead is located near several other small communities, including Collennan and Loans.

Once our technicians arrive with you around Muirhead: what we do

  • The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • Our technicians drain your tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Muirhead

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this fault underneath it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Muirhead page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Muirhead

One figure wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank can hold.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Muirhead

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Muirhead?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place. Our technicians attend Morrisons and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Never switch the engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
