Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mutley

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Mutley or the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us so we shall show you what comes next before you attempt much else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you do not crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Belgrave Road, anywhere — an awkward spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • Get your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning PL4 6 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • What got in, about how many litres, plus if the car has run — these three details determine your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive working on a fuel that had shed a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Renault Clio, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting outside Plymouth till the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a lot, which is why the question our technicians ask is about mileage not hours. Phone. Keep the car just where it stands.

It will fire up. It will pull away quite happily. That is the problem, as a diesel on a thinned tank acts generally whilst grinding the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't try the trip home from The Mannamead — leave the Nissan Qashqai then call us.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that is the whole process. It explains the normal Moorview Park call too: a diesel BMW 1 Series that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Why we are firm about not driving on: the pump waits before the injectors, so whatever a wearing pump gives off passes onward with the fuel. Leave the Audi A6 near Kadampa Meditation Centre then phone us.

Purged, not cleared — that's what a diesel Mercedes A-Class which got as far as Mutley Baptist Church needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at the forecourt?

The work starts at a forecourt, usually. Quite often it finishes at one as well. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that is normally where the drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the only place this ends up halted. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth it. Moving the car four lengths doesn't warrant firing the engine.

Coverage around Mutley

Being a residential suburb, Mutley has a regular visit, and the places close by go with it on that same run: Ford Park and Mannamead, Lipson and Lower Compton, Lipson Vale.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns across Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Guessing is the habit to avoid, above all on the boundary or anywhere your phone struggles. Ring us and enquire.

The area this page spans appears on this map. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Stuck on the kerbside near Mutley

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge beside Ford Park Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Stay beside your car while it is sensible to be inside, yet out of the car if it isn't. Do not fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the fuel system. A technician heading to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the local M5 comes in — under 50 miles from Mutley. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under a mile to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

A little about Mutley

Mutley is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon, sitting at an elevation of around 50 metres above sea level. Mutley is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock and is situated close to the city centre, with nearby areas including Ford Park and Lipson. Mutley is a densely populated residential community, with a population of approximately 14635 people, and is within walking distance of Plymouth's amenities. Mutley benefits from its proximity to the coast and the city's maritime heritage.

What we do when our technicians get to you around Mutley

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • Away goes the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to set off. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Mutley?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — don't crank it — yet the problem is not. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Mutley page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Mutley

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Mutley

At a petrol station in Mutley, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more regularly than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect.
