Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Mwyndy

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Mwyndy and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Phone and our technicians shall show you what follows from here before you attempt any more.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never start the car. Turned on all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off as well. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd rather get to a tricky location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has not moved. On the verge on A4119, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode starting CF72 8 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has run — those three facts decide your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and so a diesel BMW 3 Series parked at Pontyclun this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew diluted diesel through the pump was the trip in. Ring us before you set off to collect the vehicle.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Mercedes C-Class will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That is the entire mechanism, and it explains the normal Miskin Manor Cricket Club call: a diesel Audi A6 that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it gives off downstream with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Volkswagen Polo close to Arthur Llewellyn Jenkins.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Skoda Superb that made it close to Asda Living needs the circuit flushed, not cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Mwyndy

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A fair portion of the work gets done at the pump, since that is where it usually begins. If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's typically where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

A filling station is the one setting the mistake gets halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Starting it to shift four car lengths isn't.

Coverage around Mwyndy

Miskin, Cross Inn, Talbot Green, Pontyclun, Llantrisant — every one of these on our journeys that take us over to Mwyndy too, a rural hamlet.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Rhondda Cynon Taf have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Contact us to enquire instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere the satnav can get wrong.

Check our map for the area covered here. Every bit of it is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Mwyndy: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over somewhere suitable. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge on Ffordd Cefn-yr-Hendy, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle while it is not sensible to sit inside, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll take the van to an inconvenient spot without any trouble, and for the car that's a lot better than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile out of Mwyndy, the local M4 is what matters now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit then switch off. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you around Mwyndy

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn from that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Mwyndy AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Mwyndy page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Mwyndy

What moves the price is set out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Mwyndy

I am on a forecourt around Mwyndy. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. Often, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more regularly than people expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is your car still with you?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
