Petrol in Diesel

Naseby: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Naseby or the remainder of Northamptonshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers shall explain what your next stage is. Contact us — this comes ahead of all else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And if started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so never put diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on School Lane, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning NN6 6 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • Three details settle the entire visit: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity of it, and if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair part of this work ends up done at a pump, as that is where it mostly starts. The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Inver? Given the station's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and routinely.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the one place this is caught. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and your lines along with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the offer. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Naseby

Car parks like the one at Springfields Supermarkets are somewhere our technicians work in frequently, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can access you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the car is facing. If we cannot work next to the diesel Renault Clio we will roll it without firing it — and that isn't pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of that mix out of that tank and on to the pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a roomier space has silently grown into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by Naseby Church of England Primary Academy, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.

A diesel Audi A3 parked in the car park at The Royal Oak carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till somebody drives it home. Leave the vehicle overnight then phone us first thing. Nothing degrades whilst it sits. What our technicians will ask about is if the run there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can get past the rings and into the engine oil.

Ringing from near Naseby Methodist Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped space than a vehicle a person has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Mercedes A-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not your tank.

Strange spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Filled up by All Saints without thinking, in a diesel BMW X1 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone notices, and miles is what determines how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

Areas we reach near Naseby

As a village, Naseby sees a regular visit, whilst the places close by come with it on the same run: Haselbech and Thornby, Cold Ashby and Clipston, Sibbertoft.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places in Northamptonshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. On the border, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Phone to ask rather than guessing.

The map marks the patch the page spans. We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Kerbside call-outs across Naseby

Not everybody finds a sensible place to pull over. A normal call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge of Knights Hill or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Clear of your car if it's not safe to wait there, with it if it is. Don't fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the fuel system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward location, and that's no bother for us.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Here is where the local M1 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Naseby. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

Where is Naseby?

Naseby is a village in Northamptonshire, situated near the River Nene and surrounded by rolling countryside. Naseby sits at an elevation of 191 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Naseby is located near several other villages, including Haselbech, Thornby, and Cold Ashby, and is approximately 17.6 miles from Leicester. Naseby has a population of around 778 residents.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Naseby

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out comes the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Naseby

Don't start it: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Naseby page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Naseby costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Naseby

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Naseby?

A big share of this work takes place there, so yes. We visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car remain that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
