Petrol in a Diesel Car in Nastend
If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Nastend or the rest of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers will show you what the following part will be. Contact us — this happens before everything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Never crank it — and don't trust it when it does start. That is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Turning the ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
- Don't add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Our team would much rather get to an awkward location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Nastend Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning GL10 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has run. These three answers settle your whole job.
Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can wait outside Stonehouse perfectly well. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our engineers work is not needed.
Hazards on. Ignition off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by Great Oldbury Primary Academy, you are late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and although three miles in the Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied to demand, and a frantic drive asks for plenty of it.
Out there normal, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Berryfields, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 308 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Saint Michaels and All Angels. For a diesel Dacia Duster whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get purged and not just the tank cleared.
By this point the tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in your filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it near St Josephs Catholic Church needs your system purged, not emptied.
Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?
A fair chunk of this job ends up finished at a forecourt, because that is where it often begins. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is generally where this drain gets done — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.
At a garage, it is spotted with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.
Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.
Nastend plus the villages beside it
Nastend is a rural hamlet, so our vans are out to it and to the places around it on the same runs: Newtown, Chipmans Platt, Oldend, Churchend and Nupend.
If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for most towns around Gloucestershire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. Guessing is the thing to skip, above all on a boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us and check.
That map is the ground the page spans. All of it is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.
Stuck at the kerbside in Nastend
Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge beside Thomas Tudor Way, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Stay with the car if it is wise to sit inside, and out of the vehicle when it is not. Do not start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the fuel system. Our van driving to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The local M5 is the one that matters here, and it runs under a mile from Nastend. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and never start it to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.
Nastend itself
Nastend is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Gloucestershire, with an elevation of 29 metres above sea level. Nastend lies approximately 8 miles from Gloucester and 95 miles from London, making it a relatively rural community. Nastend is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, which reflects its quiet and residential nature. Nastend is surrounded by other small settlements, including Newtown and Chipmans Platt.
Our call-out around Nastend, step by step
- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- The tainted mixture comes out of your tank.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that created the problem.
- Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
- After it is fired up, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
After that it is ready to set off. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Nastend AdBlue removal is a separate job
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never crank it — yet the problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.
Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Nastend has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Nastend
What changes the figure is set out below, since this job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Nastend
At a petrol station around Nastend, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our engineers work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Keep it turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
