Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Netheravon? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Netheravon and the remainder of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us before all else starts, and you will see what happens next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, never trust it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
  • Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Old Post Office Lane, turn your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts SP4 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, approximately how much, plus if your car has been turned over. Your responses determine whatever follows.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked outside Pewsey this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled weakened diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone us before you set off to collect the car.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Renault Megane in Netheravon and you're now stuck outside B&M Home Store with a boot loaded with shopping, call us. Never start the car once more to exit the space. We'll come to you, clear your tank, purge your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at light throttle uses little fuel, which is why those tend to be the easy ones.

You will be told to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags outside Netheravon All Saints CofE Primary School, a misfuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol past the filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

Don't risk it. The drive home from the pub in the village is perfectly possible, which is precisely the issue — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components your fuel is meant to protect. Call us, and let the Ford Focus stay where it sits.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to The Folly in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a good part of it closes. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is typically where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

No place except the forecourt can this be stopped with your engine still cold. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the assistance. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Netheravon plus the areas near it

Being a village, Netheravon gets a regular call, whilst its neighbours close by come with it on that same trip: Haxton and Fittleton, Fifield and Coombe, Figheldean.

There are separate pages for the majority of places across Wiltshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Guessing is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your phone fails. Contact us and check.

The patch this page covers sits on our map. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Broken down at the roadside near Netheravon

Not everybody finds a sensible spot to pull in. A normal call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge on Vicarage Gardens or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Fine where you are? Sit with it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll bring our van to a difficult place without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 25 miles out of Netheravon, the M4 is what counts here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What we bring changes.

Where is Netheravon?

Netheravon is a village situated on the banks of the River Avon in Wiltshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Netheravon sits at an elevation of 84 metres, approximately 11 miles north of Salisbury, and is surrounded by nearby villages such as Haxton, Fittleton, and Fifield. Netheravon has a population of around 1068 residents, who enjoy the scenic riverside setting and easy access to the city of Salisbury. Netheravon is also within commuting distance of London, being around 74 miles to the west of the capital.

The job in Netheravon, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Away flows the polluted fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Netheravon?

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Netheravon page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Netheravon

We can't put one number on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Netheravon drivers

Fuel drains on a Netheravon petrol station forecourt

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Murco is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Wiltshire and in Netheravon: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
