Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Nethercourt

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Nethercourt and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us and we can tell you what happens from here before you do anything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Clifton Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • Before you call, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning CT11 0 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has been started. The responses determine whatever happens next.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive running on a liquid that had given up most of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing outside Ramsgate until it dawns on you close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered plenty, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about distance not hours. Phone us. Leave the vehicle right where it is.

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Tesco, somewhere around Nethercourt? Then call us, and leave the engine out of it — not even to get out of that space. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these are often the simple ones.

Risk the drive home from St. Lawrence Tavern? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank runs generally whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Nissan Qashqai then ring us.

Your pump sits before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn one sheds travels downstream with the fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, then leave your diesel Peugeot 3008 where it is close to St Lawrence Church.

The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: topped up close to St Lawrence Parish Hall without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles settles how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Nethercourt

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

A good share of the work is completed at a pump, since that's where it often starts. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that's normally where the drain takes place.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the only spot this gets caught. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines together with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the help. Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Nethercourt and the towns near it

Being a residential suburb, Nethercourt gets a routine visit, whilst the places nearby come along on that same journey: Newington and Chilton, Whitehall and Pegwell, Ramsgate.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places across Kent, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to resist, above all on a boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Phone to ask.

The map marks the ground the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we cover, and none of that asks your car to move to us.

Stranded on the kerb anywhere in Nethercourt?

Some drivers find no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Grummock Avenue, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Clear of the car when it is not wise to be inside, beside it if it is. Don't fire it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into your fuel system. We'll bring the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has travelled

Your M20 is the one that matters now, and it runs under 25 miles from Nethercourt. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the next sensible exit then turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It alters what we bring.

All about Nethercourt

Nethercourt is a suburban area located on the coast of Kent, with an elevation of 47 metres above sea level. Nethercourt sits near the cities of Canterbury and the surrounding villages of Newington, Chilton, and Whitehall. Nethercourt is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated approximately 66.8 miles from London. Nethercourt has a population of around 6337 residents.

Our job around Nethercourt, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it's fired up, we make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Nethercourt AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Nethercourt page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Nethercourt?

One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Nethercourt

I am on a forecourt around Nethercourt. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

The motor stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Across Kent and in Nethercourt: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
