Petrol in a Diesel Car in Netherdale

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Netherdale and the rest of Scottish Borders. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone so our team shall explain what comes after that before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • While you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you don't crank it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Nether Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning TD1 3 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if the car has started. Those three replies determine the whole job.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Most of the job begins at the pump, meaning a fair portion of it is finished there. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

At a forecourt, this is caught with your engine never run, and nowhere else does that. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys.

The staff will generally happily move the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't merit cranking the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Netherdale

Car parks like the one at Asda are somewhere our technicians visit often, and the fuel is seldom the awkward part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that settles whether our van can get to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If we cannot work beside the diesel Renault Clio we'll shift the car without firing it — and that's not fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes that fuel system and draws more of the blend out of your tank and towards your pump, and so a motor shuffled twice into a roomier spot has silently grown into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped.

Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in the Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning run demands plenty.

Don't risk it. The drive home from The Woodcutter is quite possible, which is precisely the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone, then let the Ford Focus stay where it stands.

The pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Mercedes A-Class, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly close to Tweedbank Community Centre, then leave the restarting alone.

Netherdale and the villages near it

The same runs bring us to Langlee, Galafoot, Lowood, Easter Langlee and Glenfield as well as Netherdale, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Scottish Borders, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing about if our engineers come. Presuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Phone and ask.

This map is the ground this page covers. The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside anywhere in Netherdale?

Some people find no safe spot to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge on Woodstock Avenue, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Remain by your car while it's sensible to be in it, yet out of the car if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Driving on causes your car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult place, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

Here is where the local M8 comes in — under 50 miles from Netherdale. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

Netherdale itself

Netherdale is a suburban area situated on the riverside in the Scottish Borders, with a mix of flat housing and local amenities. Netherdale sits at an elevation of 97 metres, close to nearby places such as Langlee, Galafoot, and Lowood. Netherdale is located approximately 28 miles from Edinburgh, making it a commuter base for the city. Netherdale has a population of around 3179 residents, who enjoy the scenic riverside setting.

What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around Netherdale

  • We establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled from your tank.
  • Our engineers flush the lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's remaining in your system isn't what created the trouble.
  • We put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

After that it is ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Netherdale?

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Netherdale page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Netherdale

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Netherdale drivers

Fuel drains on a Netherdale petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our technicians work at Asda and the other forecourts locally regularly.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more often than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your car still with you?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
