Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Netherley?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Netherley and the remainder of Merseyside, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. We shall tell you what the following stage will be. Call us — this happens ahead of everything else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And if started, never rely on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Caldway Drive, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • The van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts L27 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you call.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has fired. These three facts decide the entire call-out.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Much of this job begins at the pump, so a good chunk of it gets finished there. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is generally where the drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

At a garage, it gets halted with the motor never run, and nowhere else does that. Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Very much worth it. Moving the car four bays does not justify firing the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Netherley

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height limit on the way in that decides if a technician can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Morrisons, tell us how much space there's around you and which way round the car is. Those we attend frequently. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets rolled with your engine off, and not out of fuss over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that mix exits the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better bay have gradually made a worse job of what was just a motor standing still.

Nothing alerts you, as from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from Norman Pannell Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car usually refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

You head off at the end, once we have fired it up and checked it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park by The Lee Park, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then ring us. Normal on the way out to Netherley Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Ford Kuga went, the less of that pressure it held.

No warning light exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Mercedes GLC is now resting close to Netherley Youth and Community Initiative. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than a motor giving up. Switch off. Ring us.

Areas our team serve in Netherley

Netherley is a residential suburb, and so we go out to the town and to the villages near it on those same trips: Woodlands, Belle Vale, Gateacre, Whitefield Lane End and Tarbock Green.

There are pages for the majority of towns around Merseyside, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Close to a boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Phone and enquire instead of guessing.

Check this map for the area included here. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Stuck on the kerbside somewhere around Netherley?

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge of Ontario Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Sit by your car if it is safe to wait inside, but clear of the vehicle if it isn't. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. A technician coming to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled

Here is where the local M62 counts, under a mile from Netherley. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction then turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Netherley itself

Netherley is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated on the riverside near Liverpool, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Netherley sits at a low elevation of around 15 metres, close to the nearby places of Woodlands, Belle Vale, and Gateacre. Netherley is located approximately 6 miles from Liverpool city centre, making it a commuter-friendly location. Netherley has a population of around 3867 residents, living in predominantly terraced homes.

What happens when our technicians get to you around Netherley

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled from the tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Netherley

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never fire it up — yet this problem isn't. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

AdBlue removal around Netherley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Netherley

One figure wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Netherley motorists

I am on a forecourt around Netherley. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more often than motorists expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

Keep it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
