Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Brotton?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in New Brotton or the rest of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us before all else starts, so you will learn what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start it. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Never pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we'd much rather come to a tricky location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Huntcliffe Drive, turn your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning TS12 2 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run. The replies decide whatever follows.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The work starts at the pump, usually. Regularly it finishes on site as well. Still at Asda? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

At the forecourt, it is caught with the motor never run, and nowhere else does that. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will normally happily roll the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in New Brotton

Diesel Renault Megane. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Asda. That is the phone call our engineers like, because the point beneath it is about quantity through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class in the parking area by The Queens Arms holding a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job, right up until someone drives it home. Park the car there overnight then call us in the morning. Nothing worsens as it stands. What our technicians will ask is if that run there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the oil.

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us. Fine on the way out to Hunley Golf Club, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW 5 Series went, the less of that pressure it held.

Clearing the Vauxhall Astra, changing the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning the lines, putting clean fuel through the full system: that is this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in the fuel lines rather than in that tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from near Saint Margaret of Antioch — which side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and so the spot itself is rarely the issue. A tight parking spot trumps a car driven somewhere more convenient.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then ring us about the Audi A6 by Charm Bracelet, and do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Places we reach near New Brotton

Brotton, Old Saltburn, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Skelton, New Skelton — all of them on the runs that take us across to New Brotton too, a coastal area.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in North Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Guessing is the thing to avoid, above all on the boundary or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to enquire.

This map marks the area the page spans. The vehicle does not need to move to us. We operate throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere around New Brotton?

A chance to stop somewhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge beside Saltburn Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you stay with your car or move away from it turns on whether being in it is wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your A1(M) is the road that matters here, and runs under 25 miles from New Brotton. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and do not start it to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

A little about New Brotton

New Brotton is a small locality on the north-east coast of England, situated near the towns of Brotton and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. New Brotton lies at an elevation of 102 metres, overlooking the North Sea coastline. New Brotton has a population of around 835 people, living in predominantly semi-detached housing.

What comes next when we arrive with you in New Brotton

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • We empty the tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around New Brotton?

Don't start it: that opening step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own New Brotton page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around New Brotton

What changes the figure is set out below, as this job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

New Brotton motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a New Brotton petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP Saltburn is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
