Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Dock: What Happens Now

Stop, and leave your motor off — not on, and not for a second to move the vehicle. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and no other factor decides that more than these next few minutes do. Wherever you happen to be in New Dock, this is how things run from here.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Go through the following in order, first.

  • Pull the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the components it damages, so leave the car off completely.
  • A fuller tank of the same mixture is all topping up gives you, because it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.
  • Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • The attendants will generally help you roll it clear of the pump. Ask, then roll it by hand — never on the motor, even for a couple of yards.
  • Keep your receipt: the grade and roughly how much are printed on it, and they are what our technicians ask for first.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M5 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 5 miles from New Dock, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pressing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

The fork in each New Dock fuel drain: has it run yet?

What comes after this rests on one answer, and only one.

If the engine hasn't run at all:

  • Nowhere but the tank: that's where the petrol yet is.
  • The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where your car is.
  • This, here, is the best spot to be in, and the whole reason step one matters.

Run at all, even for a second:

  • The fuel lines and your filter now carry petrol pulled from the tank.
  • Run it further and that petrol gets to your injectors, having gone through the pump first.
  • The job expands with the miles — lines flushed, filter sorted, occasionally more.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't. In the tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from New Dock

A technician that circles against a technician that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

  • DY1 1 plus the remainder of the postcode makes the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.
  • A road name is a help: Dock Lane, say, or whatever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Asda, for example — and it is much easier to find.
  • Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • Say which got in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for New Dock.
  • How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and the way it was driven.
  • The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company contracts — so it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before we arrive.

Phone 0333 366 0103 next. Email is fine as well if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

Waiting for a fuel drain around New Dock: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — which is why these count.

  • Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere dangerous? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it stands? Wait with it.
  • Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the vehicle a short way.
  • None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from your boot. So no additives.
  • No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond the tank.
  • Even the radio or your windows are not worth turning the ignition on for.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van arrives

  • Our quote comes after three questions, not before them — what went in, how much, and if it's run — because the replies set the job.
  • Out of your tank comes the contaminated blend: your tank is emptied.
  • Rinsing your lines comes next, since a car that ran has petrol past that tank, in your lines themselves.
  • The filter is seen to. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a usable one.
  • The system is primed with fresh diesel.
  • First start on fresh diesel. When priming is complete, the motor is started and our technicians make sure that it runs properly.

Until it runs on fresh diesel, our engineers stay with it. If it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon, and the vehicle returns to normal driving right away.

Once the fuel drain is done: driving in New Dock a second time

  • After it's been started on clean fuel, there's nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle tells you to pull over and call us back.
  • The paperwork answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
