Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Eltham?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in New Eltham or the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us so our engineers can show you what happens after that before you do anything else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and do not believe it if it starts. That is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for a few miles. It's not okay. It's grinding that fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We would sooner get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Green Lane, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning SE9 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three answers shape the entire call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate amount involved, and whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

How far you travelled is what our engineers query, not how long the motor has been stood — and here is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before burning it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a rushed refuel on the drive in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting outside the nearest station since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were covered with the pump labouring on a fuel stripped of most of its protection. Call us and keep the car precisely where it sits.

Diesel Peugeot 3008. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Co-op Food. That's the phone call we want, as the point beneath it's about amount through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

Normal on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how the run to Southwood Recreation Ground went, that tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further your Ford Fiesta travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and call us.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel BMW X3 near New Eltham Library. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site regardless. We ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven again before anyone phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned lumpy after a few streets, and the diesel Dacia Sandero is now waiting by Victory Assembly. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of an engine giving up. Turn off. Ring us.

Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

The work kicks off at the pump, typically. Often enough it wraps up on site too. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's consent, that's a spot our technicians work, and regularly.

At a forecourt, this gets stopped with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does that. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians put it right where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the assistance. Moving the car four spaces does not warrant firing it.

Service in New Eltham

New Eltham is a residential suburb, so our vans are out to it and to the places around it on those same trips: Eltham, Mottingham, Middle Park, Avery Hill and Foxbury.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most places in Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire instead of guessing.

The patch the page spans appears on this map. We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

New Eltham: stranded where you pulled up

Some drivers find no suitable place to pull in whatsoever. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge of Parkview Road or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Clear of your car when it's not safe to sit there, beside it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled

Here is where the M20 counts, under 10 miles out of New Eltham. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the car to reposition. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what we bring.

New Eltham itself

New Eltham is a suburban area in southeast London, situated near the lakes and parks of the surrounding countryside. New Eltham sits at an elevation of 47 metres, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. New Eltham is located close to the neighbouring areas of Eltham, Mottingham, and Middle Park, and is approximately 9.5 miles from central London.

What follows when our engineers arrive with you in New Eltham

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to set off. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

New Eltham AdBlue removal is a separate job

Do not fire it up: that opening instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around New Eltham has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in New Eltham

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel queries from New Eltham drivers

Fuel drains on a New Eltham petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more frequently than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
