Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Greens

Don't start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across New Greens and the rest of Hertfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us before all else begins, and you'll hear what comes after that.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Francis Avenue, anywhere — an odd place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, gather your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning AL3 6 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Three answers determine the full call-out: the fuel you poured in, the approximate measure of it, plus if anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Removing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this work usually begins, and where a big portion of that ends. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's agreement, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

At a garage, this is caught with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Very much worth it. Rolling it four bays does not justify firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in New Greens

We are in car parks like the one outside Mrs. Ladybird Polish Shop often, and it's rarely your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the way in, which settles if a van can reach you at all. So mention how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the car is facing. If there's no room to work next to the BMW 3 Series, our engineers move it without the engine. That isn't fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier spot is silently a bigger job than one no one touched.

Try the drive home from Jolly Sailor? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off just fine, which is the trouble — a diesel on a diluted tank runs typically whilst wearing down the components the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Audi A4 then ring us.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Toulmin Drive field in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.

The pump rests ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off travels on with the fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, and leave the diesel Dacia Duster where it is close to Christ Church.

The fuel filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that is where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the damage waits by this point, and a diesel Ford Kuga that made it close to Beech Bottom Dyke needs the circuit purged rather than emptied.

New Greens and the towns next to it

New Greens is a residential suburb, and our technicians are out to it and to the areas around it on the same journeys: Townsend, Bernards Heath, St Albans, Childwick Green and Childwick Bury.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most places in Hertfordshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours. Close to a boundary, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Ring us and enquire rather than assuming.

That map shows the area the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians work on, and none of that needs the car to move to us.

New Greens: stranded wherever you stopped

Some people get no safe place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge on Therfield Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. Never start it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the system. Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no problem for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M1 comes in, under 5 miles from New Greens. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It changes what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is New Greens?

New Greens is a suburban area located near St Albans in Hertfordshire, sitting at an elevation of around 110 metres in the inland landscape of the Eastern region. New Greens is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Townsend and Bernards Heath. New Greens is also within commuting distance of London, being approximately 20 miles from the city centre.

Our visit in New Greens, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out goes the contaminated mixture.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Greens is a separate matter

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate New Greens page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around New Greens?

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in New Greens

I'm on a forecourt in New Greens. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. We attend Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more regularly than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Never turn the engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect.

Throughout Hertfordshire and in New Greens: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
