Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Milton? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in New Milton or the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Our technicians can explain what the next move is. Contact us — that happens before anything else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would sooner get to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Old Milton Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • The van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning BH25 6, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been started. The answers decide everything that comes after.

Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Much of this job begins at the pump, so a fair portion of it ends up done on site. Still at Tesco? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unstarted. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle is. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry our technicians hope for sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off outside Morrisons.

Move the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags at New Milton Junior School, a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for good manners, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter on to the pump. Let everyone grumble. Phone us.

Risk the trip home from The Walker Arms? Don't. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves normally whilst wearing the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the BMW 3 Series then call us.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel Peugeot 3008 close to War Memorial. You will not know how full that tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. Our technicians ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

By this point your tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Audi A3 that made it near Bradbeers needs your system purged, not drained.

New Milton plus the towns next to it

As a coastal town, New Milton has a frequent call, whilst the villages round about come along on that same trip: Old Milton and Ashley, Barton on Sea and Bashley, Hordle.

We do come. Those places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around Hampshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Close to the border, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Contact us to ask instead of presuming.

The patch the page covers is on this map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our engineers serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

Stuck at the kerb anywhere in New Milton?

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge of Ashley Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Out of your car when it's not wise to be in it, by it if it is. Never fire up the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. However awkward the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where your M27 comes in — under 15 miles away from New Milton. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never start the car to move it. On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Where is New Milton?

New Milton is a coastal town in Hampshire, situated approximately 15 miles west of Southampton and 84 miles south-west of London. New Milton has a population of around 18,189 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. New Milton sits at an elevation of 35 metres, near the Solent coast, and is close to nearby places such as Old Milton, Ashley, and Barton on Sea. New Milton is a significant residential centre in the region, with a mix of local amenities and commuter links.

When we reach you in New Milton: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn from that tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • After it's started, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. There's no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

New Milton AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never crank it — yet this fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own New Milton page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in New Milton

One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from New Milton drivers

At a petrol station around New Milton, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this happens. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission we attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more regularly than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep it switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
