Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Monkland

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over New Monkland and the rest of North Lanarkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our engineers can show you what your next part is. Phone — that happens before all else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you never start it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Raebog Road? Hazards on, and leave it there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning ML6 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • Three answers decide the full job: the stuff you put in, the approximate quantity of it, and whether it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you went is what we ask about, not how long the car has been stood — and here's why. Diesel has two tasks on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it greases its high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a quick top-up on the drive in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting at Coatdyke since quarter past eight means those few miles were travelled with your pump running on a liquid drained of most of its protection. Phone us then leave the vehicle exactly where it is.

It will start. It will move off perfectly well. That is the problem, as a diesel on a thinned tank behaves normally whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not chance the trip home from the pub in the village — leave the Dacia Duster then phone us.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of your injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off on with the fuel. Call us. Leave the BMW 5 Series close to New Monkland Parish Church.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by War Memorial or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle lumpy, and your diesel Ford Kuga is parked up by Commonhead Mining Disaster Memorial. The engine isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours typically get driven a second time before anyone picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and call us.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Much of the job starts at a forecourt, so a big chunk of it is completed there. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's agreement, that's a place our technicians work, and often.

A forecourt is the only place this is halted before your motor has fired. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Roll it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Do our engineers reach your part of New Monkland?

As a village, New Monkland sees a routine visit, and the areas nearby come with it on the same run: Glenmavis and Golfhill, Thrashbush and Stand, Burnfoot.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most places across North Lanarkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. On a boundary, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us and check rather than presuming.

That map shows the patch this page includes. Every bit of it is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Stopped at the kerb anywhere in New Monkland?

Some drivers have no suitable place to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge on Dalmacoulter Court, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Clear of the motor if it isn't safe to sit there, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then check this

This is where the M73 counts, under 5 miles away from New Monkland. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and don't start the car to reposition. It affects what we bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

New Monkland enjoys a scenic setting, with the river flowing through the village.

Once our technicians reach you in New Monkland: what we do

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it is turned on, we check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Monkland is a distinct job

Do not fire it up: that first instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate New Monkland page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in New Monkland?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from New Monkland drivers

Fuel drains on a New Monkland petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement we work at Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not put back what petrol has diluted. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.
