Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Parks

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over New Parks and the remainder of Leicestershire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Our engineers shall tell you what the next step will be. Phone — this comes before all else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the vehicle — and don't depend on it when it runs. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel normally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It's eating into the fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Kay Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • The van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning LE3 9, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has fired — these three details shape the whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat outside Leicester since this morning? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the drive in that drew thinned diesel through the pump. Phone before you move it.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at The Co-operative Food now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. Your Audi A4 will have felt entirely usual on the way back from Parks Primary School — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor usually will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfuelled Peugeot 3008, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near St Aidan, then leave the restarting alone.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and your diesel BMW 1 Series is parked up by New Parks Leisure Centre. Your engine isn't failing — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours usually get driven a second time before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and phone us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this job usually starts, and where a large portion of that finishes. The drain usually takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's permission, that is a spot we work, and regularly.

No place other than a forecourt can it be halted with your engine still unrun. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.

The staff will generally happily wheel the car out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing. Cranking the car to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

New Parks and the villages near it

New Parks is a residential suburb, so we get out to the town and to the places around it on those same rounds: Western Park, New Found Pool, Glenfield, Frog Island and Braunstone Frith.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns in Leicestershire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Presuming is the thing to skip, particularly on a border or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Ring us and enquire.

Check the map for the area shown on this page. All of it is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

Roadside call-outs across New Parks

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge of Dillon Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside your car while it's wise to wait inside, and out of it if it isn't. Don't start it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. A technician driving to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

This is where the local M1 matters, under 3 miles away from New Parks. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in our van.

A little about New Parks

New Parks is a suburban area located on the western edge of Leicester, with New Parks sitting near several parks and open spaces, including Western Park and New Found Pool. New Parks has a population of around 7333 people and New Parks is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. New Parks is situated approximately 1.9 miles from Leicester city centre, at an elevation of around 92 metres above sea level.

Our visit in New Parks, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • The tank gets cleared of it.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around New Parks

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the fault under it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around New Parks has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. We handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in New Parks

What changes the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

New Parks motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around New Parks. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the vehicle off. It's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Turned off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
