Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Town? Don't Start It
With your tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout New Town and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us and our engineers will show you what comes after that before you try anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- Never crank it. Turned on all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a few miles. People get that confused. It's not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
- Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and our team would much rather come to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Greenfield Court, switch your hazards on then keep the car there.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts BD22 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
- What was put in, about how much, and also if the motor has fired — these three replies decide your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Renault Megane left outside Keighley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone us before you head off to fetch the vehicle.
This is what a job in the car park outside The Reservoir Tavern usually looks like. Our engineers reach the car, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three answers settle much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our technicians fire it up, confirm it runs correctly, and you drive away.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how that trip to Lund Park went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and call us.
Knocking? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your misfuelled Peugeot 3008, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near All Saints' church, and leave the restarting alone.
By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 5 Series that got by Al-Amin Masjid needs the system flushed, not cleared.
At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
The job starts at a forecourt, typically. Quite often the job wraps up on site too. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the site's consent, that's a spot our technicians work, and routinely.
A forecourt is the only place it gets halted before your motor has run. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where your car is.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth it. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.
Will our technicians cover your end of New Town?
The same runs bring us to Holy Croft, Highfield, Knowle Park, Guard House and Keighley besides New Town, which is a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places across West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours. Near a boundary, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Call us and check instead of assuming.
Look at our map for the ground covered on this page. The car doesn't need to come to us. We work over all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
New Town: stuck where you pulled up
A chance to stop somewhere safe does not fall to everybody. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of West Leeds Street as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.
Out of the car if it is not sensible to wait in it, beside it when it is. Don't start up your motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. However awkward the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
Your M606 is the one that matters here, and it lies under 10 miles from New Town. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what we bring.
Where's New Town?
New Town is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 147 metres. New Town lies approximately 8.5 miles from Bradford and is surrounded by other residential areas such as Holy Croft, Highfield, and Knowle Park. New Town has a population of around 10367 people and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing. New Town is also relatively distant from London, being around 179.4 miles away.
What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you around New Town
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- The polluted mixture is pulled from that tank.
- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the problem, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleaned.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- We start it and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
At that point it is ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in New Town?
The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.
Both are ours. There is a separate New Town page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around New Town
We cannot put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:
- This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your car is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it's not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel questions from New Town drivers
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in New Town?
Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Our technicians visit Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more frequently than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Still with your car?
Your engine remains off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists assume.
