Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New York? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in New York or the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Just one call our way is enough: we can show you what comes next. Try this right away.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't fire it up. Started regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and we'd rather get to an odd place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on New York Road, turn those hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode beginning NE29 8 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.
  • Three answers settle the whole visit: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark volume involved, and if it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill on the road in, and the penny drops somewhere around eleven — by that point the diesel Renault Megane has been sitting outside Seaton Delaval for three hours. Call us then leave it just where it stands. The drive in is the bit that counts here, since diesel performs two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were travelled with the pump working on a liquid that had given up much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how far you drove, not how long your vehicle has been standing.

You'll be urged to move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at New York Primary School, a wrongly fuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime drags more petrol past the fuel filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains the ordinary Hilltop Millennium Green call: a diesel Dacia Duster that drove out there without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that's a misfuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Do not restart the vehicle to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, by Saint Aidan's or anywhere else.

Repaired and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the certain advice you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Ford Fiesta close to PaddlePod (Shiremoor) and it'll start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a good part of that closes. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Shell that is typically where this drain takes place.

Before your engine has started — the forecourt is the only setting this ends up caught. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Move it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Do we reach your end of New York?

Being a coastal village, New York gets a regular visit, whilst the areas nearby go along on that same trip: Murton and Billy Mill, Preston Grange and West Chirton, West Monkseaton.

Our engineers still come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Tyne and Wear, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Phone to ask rather than assuming — borders especially, and anywhere the satnav may get wrong.

The map outlines the ground this page covers. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside stops across New York

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge beside Westminster Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Out of the vehicle while it's not sensible to sit in it, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky location, and that's no bother for us.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the A167(M) comes in — under 10 miles away from New York. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

A bit about New York

New York is a small village in Tyne and Wear, situated on the coast near Newcastle upon Tyne. New York sits at an elevation of 69 metres, looking out over the North Sea, and is surrounded by other nearby places such as Murton and Billy Mill. New York has a population of around 1910 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. New York is located approximately 5.9 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, making it a commuter-friendly village.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you in New York

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Our technicians drain that tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's remaining in the system isn't what started the problem.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • It's fired up with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running smoothly.

That has the car ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around New York is a different problem

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own New York page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around New York

What shifts the price is listed below, as the job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around New York

Fuel drains on a New York petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers attend eg and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the vehicle off. It's recoverable far more often than people fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.
