Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in New Zealand?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across New Zealand and the remainder of Dorset. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the engine has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. We will tell you what the following part will be. Phone — it comes before all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • While you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you never fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off also — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for precisely those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on South Mill Lane? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you dial, get your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning DT6 3 — that's what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Three facts decide the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate quantity involved, plus if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Ring us before you collect the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle outside Maiden Newton ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any harm happened on the journey in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had thinned.

Twenty to nine. By Bridport Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave the engine alone, then phone us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Mercedes C-Class or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of it.

It will fire up. It will pull away just fine. That is the issue, since a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually whilst wearing the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never chance the drive home from Woodman Inn — leave the Peugeot 3008 and call us.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Volkswagen Touran, a fill-up near Electric Palace that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

The filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Audi Q5 that got close to Bridport United Church needs the circuit cleared instead of cleared.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel on a forecourt?

A good portion of the work is finished at the pump, since that's where it mostly kicks off. Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Esso that is generally where this drain gets done.

A filling station is the single setting it can be caught before your engine has fired. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car is.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth it. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Do our engineers cover your corner of New Zealand?

Being a coastal area, New Zealand has a frequent visit, and the villages nearby come with it on that same round: Bridport and Coneygar, Allington and Skilling, Watton.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns around Dorset have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone and check instead of assuming — borders above all, and wherever a satnav can get wrong.

See this map for the area included on this page. All of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Stranded on the roadside in New Zealand

Not everybody has a chance to stop anywhere suitable. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Church Street because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Sit beside your car if it's sensible to wait in it, and clear of the car when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then read this

under 25 miles out of New Zealand, the M5 is what counts here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the first sensible exit and switch off. Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

All about New Zealand

New Zealand is a coastal locality in Dorset, situated near the towns of Bridport and Allington. New Zealand lies at an elevation of 17 metres, close to the sea and within a short distance of other nearby places such as Coneygar. New Zealand is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, which reflects its development as a residential area. New Zealand is located approximately 126 miles from London and 33 miles from the city of Wells.

The job around New Zealand, step by step

  • We check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • That tank gets emptied of it.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the trouble, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleaned.
  • We put new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • We start it and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Zealand is a separate problem

Do not fire it up: that first instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate New Zealand page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around New Zealand

What shifts the price is listed below, because this job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around New Zealand

Fuel drains on a New Zealand petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We visit Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable a lot more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave the car shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
