Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Newhailes?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Newhailes or the rest of East Lothian, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us so our technicians will tell you what comes after that before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you never fire it up, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Newhailes Crescent, switch your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts EH21 6 — that is what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been run. Those replies shape all that happens next.

Never drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Musselburgh while the work happens, and we'd far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our engineers like goes like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now shut off at Aldi.

Someone will advise you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. Leave it, let everyone complain, and give us a call.

It will fire up. It will pull away just fine. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a diluted tank acts typically while wearing down the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, never try the trip home from Ship Inn — leave the Peugeot 308 then phone us.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car waits, because a diesel Audi A4 parked outside Newhailes House & Gardens is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Newhailes

Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where this job usually begins, and where a good chunk of it finishes. The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's agreement, that's a spot we work, and regularly.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the single setting it gets stopped. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Worth it. Rolling the car four spaces doesn't merit cranking the motor.

Newhailes and the places beside it

Newhailes is a residential suburb, so our team get out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same journeys: Stoneyhill, Stoneyhill Steading, Fisherrow, Whitehill and Joppa.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all places around East Lothian have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Phone and ask instead of guessing, particularly where you're on a border or somewhere a satnav can't find.

See this map for the patch shown here. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car doesn't need to travel to us.

Newhailes: stuck wherever you stopped

Not everyone has the opportunity to stop anywhere suitable. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Maitland Park Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Stay beside the motor if it is sensible to wait inside, but clear of it if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van heading to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Your M8 is the one that matters here, and sits under 10 miles from Newhailes. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and do not restart the car to move it. It alters what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

All about Newhailes

Newhailes is a coastal suburban area in East Lothian, situated near the city of Edinburgh. Newhailes lies at a low elevation of around 9 metres, close to the shores of the Firth of Forth. Newhailes is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near other local places such as Stoneyhill and Fisherrow.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Newhailes

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank is cleared of it.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the issue, and so your fuel lines get purged and the filter cleared.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Newhailes is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — never start the car — but the issue is not. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal around Newhailes has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Newhailes

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Newhailes

Fuel drains on a Newhailes petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

Never switch the car back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
