Newham Grange: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Newham Grange and the rest of Durham. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then our engineers shall show you what comes next before you try any more.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, never trust it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off also — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so never tip diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to an awkward place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Newham Grange Avenue, put the hazards on then keep the car there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning TS18 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
- What went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has run — those three answers decide the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Quarter past eight, a hurried top-up on the road in, and it dawns on you at about eleven — by that point your diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Stockton for three hours. Phone us then keep it right where it sits. The journey in is the bit that counts now, as diesel performs two roles on its way through a motor: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fuel that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the motor has been standing.
Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from St Bede's Catholic Academy. They all do, and that's the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Ring us with about how far you travelled and how hard you worked it; the second one counts more than the first.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through — that's the entire mechanism. It explains the ordinary Stockton Cricket Club call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that went out without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that is the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Three things help when you call from near St Paul's Newtown - A Church of England and Methodist Church Partnership: which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, so the location itself is rarely the problem — we'd far rather deal with a narrow parking bay than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain your BMW 1 Series, change the fuel filter where there's a usable one, flush the lines then put clean fuel through the entire system, as by this point the worst of it is resting in the lines rather than in your tank.
Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then ring us about the Audi A6 near Newtown Community Resource Centre, and do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.
Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt
Forecourts are where the job often kicks off, and where a large chunk of it closes. Still at Sainsbury's? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.
A forecourt is the one place the mistake is caught before the motor has started. Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.
The staff will usually offer to wheel the car away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.
Do our technicians serve your part of Newham Grange?
Stockton Grange, Grangefield, Newtown, Gilpin Brown, Primrose Hill — each of them on the rounds that carry us over to Newham Grange too, a residential suburb.
Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns in Durham have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Ring us and ask instead of guessing — county lines above all, and wherever your phone tends to get wrong.
The patch the page spans appears on this map. The car doesn't need to come to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Newham Grange: broken down where you pulled up
Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull in. A common call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on Stanhope Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.
Whether you sit beside the car or step clear of it rests on if sitting nearby seems sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Driving on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that is no trouble for us.
Driven it already? Stop, then check this
Here is where the A1(M) counts, under 10 miles away from Newham Grange. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what we bring.

The call-out around Newham Grange, step by step
- The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
- Away comes the polluted mixture.
- What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running properly.
That has it ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Newham Grange is a different problem
The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Newham Grange page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Newham Grange
We can't put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Newham Grange drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
I am on a forecourt in Newham Grange. Can you drain it on the spot?
Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians attend Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more frequently than motorists assume.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
The engine stays off.
If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect.
