Newpool: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Newpool and the remainder of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Ring us so our engineers will tell you what happens after that before you try much else.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
- Do not thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Meadowside, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
- Before you phone, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning ST8 6 — that's what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
- What was put in, approximately how many litres, and if the motor has started — these three replies decide the whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting outside Kidsgrove this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled weakened diesel through the pump was the trip in. Phone us before you go to fetch it.
If you've put petrol in the diesel Audi A4 in Newpool and you're now stuck at Aldi with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Never start it again to get out of the space. Our technicians will come to you, clear your tank, flush your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little fuel, so such jobs are often the straightforward jobs.
Shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags by Knypersley First School, a misfilled diesel Ford Focus is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming happens with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter on to the pump. Let them moan. Phone us.
What our technicians will ask is whether the run there was short and chilly, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the car park by The Gardeners Arms with a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens whilst it sits, and so park it overnight then ring us first thing.
Unfamiliar places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Biddulph Library without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage is what settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.
Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?
A good part of this work ends up done at a pump, because that's where it usually begins. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Sainsbury's that's usually where this drain gets done.
At a forecourt, this gets stopped with the motor never run, and nowhere else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key.
The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting the car four bays doesn't justify firing the motor.
Areas our vans reach in Newpool
Being a residential suburb, Newpool gets a routine visit, whilst the areas nearby go along on the same journey: Knowle Style and Brown Lees, Knypersley and Biddulph, Braddocks Hay.
There are pages for the majority of locations around Staffordshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Phone and enquire instead of presuming, particularly when you're on the border or somewhere your satnav misreads.
The ground this page spans sits on our map. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.
Newpool: broken down wherever you pulled up
The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not come to everybody. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge beside Newpool Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.
Sit by the vehicle while it's safe to wait in it, but clear of it if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
Here is where the local M6 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Newpool. Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.
A little about Newpool
Newpool is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated approximately 6 miles from Stoke-on-Trent, and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Newpool sits at an elevation of 196 metres, in a region of gently rolling hills and countryside. Newpool is close to nearby places such as Knowle Style, Brown Lees, and Knypersley, and is home to a population of around 3629 residents. Newpool is located inland, about 140.6 miles from London.
Our visit in Newpool, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
- Away comes the polluted mixture.
- We rinse the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is left in your system is not what started the problem.
- Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the system.
- Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Newpool
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never crank it — but the issue isn't. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Newpool page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Newpool?
What shifts the price is set out below, since this job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel questions from Newpool motorists
Fuel drains on a Newpool petrol station forecourt
Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers attend Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more often than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is the car still with you?
Your engine remains off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
