Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Newton? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the engine. While the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Newton and the rest of Bridgend, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We will show you what your next move will be. Phone — it goes before everything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for several miles. Motorists get that confused. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to handle, and we would much rather get to an odd spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Beach Road, turn those hazards on then leave it there.
  • Have your location ready before you call. A postcode starting CF36 5 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the car has run — the three details determine the full job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A big share of this job ends up done at the pump, because that is where it often starts. Still at Oil4Wales? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can this be stopped with your engine still cold. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the help. Starting it just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Newton

Petrol in the Volkswagen Tiguan, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Aldi, somewhere in Newton? Then phone, and leave the engine out of it — not even to exit the spot. Somebody comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these tend to be the easy ones.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt entirely usual on the way back from the local primary school. They do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly will not run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — meanwhile your high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there is nothing to warn you about. Phone us with about how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second one counts more than the first.

The pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Griffin Park, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses downstream with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Audi A3 by Saint John the Baptist Church.

What takes place next is the issue. Your engine immediately draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that advice is half true, as do it to a diesel Ford Kuga parked up, Coney Beach Funfair say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, and that is the difference between your car being repaired and your car merely starting.

Do we serve your part of Newton?

Wig-Fach, Porthcawl, Tythegston, Nottage, South Cornelly — each of those on our journeys that take us over to Newton as well, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all locations across Bridgend have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Presuming is the mistake to skip, particularly on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles. Phone to check.

The patch this page covers appears on the map. The vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the roadside somewhere around Newton?

Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge on Clevis Hill, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the motor while it isn't safe to be there, by it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However tricky the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

Here is where the local M4 comes into it — under 3 miles from Newton. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never start it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

A bit about Newton

Newton is a coastal suburban area in Bridgend, Wales, situated near the villages of Wig-Fach and Tythegston. Newton lies at an elevation of 15 metres, close to the seaside town of Porthcawl. Newton is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Newton is located near Swansea, the nearest city, which is 14.7 miles away.

The call-out in Newton, step by step

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away goes the contaminated mixture.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it's turned on, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Newton is a separate matter

Do not start it: that opening instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Newton page. Both are ours to deal with.

Newton pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Newton

Fuel drains on a Newton petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work happens. Often, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
