Newton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Newton and the rest of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Just one call our way is plenty: we shall show you what comes from here. Make that right away.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Never fire it up. Started all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Our team would sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Manor Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SK14 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the motor has started. Those three facts determine the full visit.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work often starts, and where a fair portion of it closes. If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that's usually where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unrun. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where your car is.

The staff will normally happily wheel it away from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Newton

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Co-op Food. That is the call our engineers want, since the point under it is about volume through your pump not hours on the clock.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Victoria Street Playing Fields, it's doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds downstream with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Ford Focus by St Mary's Parish Hall.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not careless — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Dacia Duster, a fill-up near St Mary that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Mercedes E-Class that got close to Astley Sports Village needs your circuit cleared instead of emptied.

Newton plus the towns beside it

As a residential suburb, Newton has a routine call, and the villages nearby go with it on that same journey: Yew Tree and The Railway Sidings, Godley and Flowery Field, Newton Wood.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around Greater Manchester, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list means nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Presuming is the habit to resist, particularly on the boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us and ask.

That map is the area this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to move to us.

Stranded on the kerbside near Newton

A chance to pull over somewhere safe does not come to everybody. A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge on Bradley Green Road or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Safe right there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. A technician driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local M67 comes in — under a mile from Newton. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction then turn off. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in the van.

About Newton

Newton is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 7.5 miles east of Manchester city centre. Newton sits at an elevation of around 153 metres, in a region of gently sloping land near the Pennine foothills. Newton is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby neighbourhoods including Yew Tree and Godley. Newton is part of the larger Manchester urban area, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach.

When we arrive with you around Newton: what happens

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn from that tank.
  • We rinse the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Newton is a distinct matter

The issue isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Newton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Newton

One figure would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank takes.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it is not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Newton

Fuel drains on a Newton petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
