Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Newton Village?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Newton Village and the remainder of Midlothian. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Our technicians shall show you what the following part is. Phone — it comes ahead of everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Newton Church Road? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A difficult place works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you call, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting EH22 1 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has run — the three facts determine the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job often begins, and where a big chunk of it finishes. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at BP that's usually where this drain happens.

Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets caught. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Worth doing. Firing the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Newton Village and the towns near it

As a coastal village, Newton Village sees a regular call, whilst the villages close by come along on the same trip: Danderhall and Millerhill, Old Craighall and Lugton, Cleikimin.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all towns across Midlothian, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours. Contact us to enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever your satnav may misread.

That map shows the ground this page includes. Your car does not need to travel to us. We work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both prepared. Your BMW 3 Series will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank fires up and pulls away just fine. Try the trip home from Edmonstone Inn? Don't. Phone us and leave the Ford Focus where it is.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the usual Kaim Plantation call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it leaks past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was engineered about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your misfilled Audi A3, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near War Memorial, and leave the restarting alone.

The fuel filter, your lines, your pump and the rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C3 that made it by Memorial Garden needs your circuit purged rather than drained.

Kerbside call-outs around Newton Village

Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere safe. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Baronet Park as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car when it is not safe to sit in it, by it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 10 miles out of Newton Village, the M8 is what counts here. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Where's Newton Village?

Newton Village is a small coastal village in Midlothian, situated near Edinburgh and overlooking the Firth of Forth. Newton Village has a population of around 631 people and is characterised by detached housing. Newton Village is close to nearby places such as Danderhall, Millerhill, and Old Craighall, and is located at an elevation of approximately 50 metres above sea level.

Once our engineers reach you around Newton Village: what happens

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in the system is not what created the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • When it is started, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Newton Village

Do not start it: that opening instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Newton Village page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Newton Village?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank can hold.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Newton Village motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Newton Village, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians attend Wm Turnbull and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable much more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Turned off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
