Newtown: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Newtown and the rest of Cheshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. A single call our way is sufficient: we shall tell you what happens after this. Try that straight away.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Do not crank it — and never rely on it if it runs. This is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just will not run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It is not all right. It is eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
- Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd sooner travel to a difficult place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Francis Road, turn those hazards on and keep it there.
- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning WA6 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
- Three answers determine the full job: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate measure involved, and if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where this work often begins, and where a good part of it ends. If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's usually where this drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.
Nowhere except a garage can the mistake be stopped with your engine still cold. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.
Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Starting it over four car lengths? Don't.
Newtown plus the places near it
Those same journeys get us to Frodsham, Overton, Marsh Green, Bradley and Clifton besides Newtown, which is a new town.
If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across Cheshire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Assuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the boundary or somewhere a satnav fails. Call us to ask.
The map shows the patch this page covers. The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.
You'll be advised to shift it out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags by Frodsham Manor House Primary School, a misfuelled Ford Focus running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter toward the pump. Let them complain. Phone us.
Here's what a job in the car park at Red Lion typically looks like. Our technicians get to the vehicle, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies settle most of the work. Then the polluted blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Audi A3 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our engineers start the engine, check it runs properly, and you set off.
Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how the drive to Hob Hey Wood went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the BMW 5 Series went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off and call us.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — near Frodsham Community Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfilled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what's wrong.
Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you will get — drain it, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 near St Luke's and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds reasonable. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.
Stopped on the kerbside somewhere in Newtown?
Not everybody gets a chance to pull in anywhere safe. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Weaver Road because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the normal kind.
Remain beside your car while it is wise to sit inside, but clear of it if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Our van heading to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled
Here is where your M56 matters, under a mile out of Newtown. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and do not start the car to reposition. It changes what our engineers bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.
About Newtown
Newtown is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the coast and approximately 10.5 miles from Chester. Newtown has a relatively low elevation of 23 metres and is surrounded by nearby places such as Frodsham, Overton, and Marsh Green. Newtown is characterised by its predominant semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical residential development of the region.
What happens when we reach you around Newtown
- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The polluted fuel comes from the tank.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- We start the car and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
At that point it is ready to set off. There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Newtown is a different matter
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.
Both are ours. There's a separate Newtown page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Newtown costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
One number wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Newtown
I am on a forecourt around Newtown. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more often than motorists fear.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It's not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Standing next to it?
The motor remains off.
Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
