Newtown: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Newtown and the rest of Dorset. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While your engine has not run and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our team will explain what the following stage is. Ring us — it comes before all else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Turned on anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Bournemouth Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. An awkward location works for us better than a started motor.
  • The van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning DT11 9, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, about how many litres, and if the motor has been started. Your answers settle everything that happens next.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where the job often starts, and where a good share of that finishes. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Tesco that is normally where this drain happens.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the only location it is stopped. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing it just to shift four car lengths is not.

The enquiry we want runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off at Tesco. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Twenty to nine. Outside Blandford St Mary Church of England Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

You set off at the end, once our engineers have started the engine and made sure it runs properly on new diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park by Charlton Inn, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when our technicians reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Out there normal, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Charlton Beeches, look at your tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor failing — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position usually get driven once more before somebody phones. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Citroen C3 now sitting by Charlton Marshall Village Hall. Switch the car off then call us.

Parts we cover in Newtown

Littleton, Charlton on the Hill, Lower Blandford St Mary, Charlton Marshall, Langton Long Blandford — all of these on the runs that take us over to Newtown too, a new town.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Dorset have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Close to the border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us to ask instead of assuming.

The map shows the patch this page includes. Every bit of that is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Stuck at the roadside around Newtown

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Jubilee Green, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Remain by your car if it is wise to be in it, yet clear of the car if it is not. Never fire it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system. Our van coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The M27 is the one that matters now, and lies under 25 miles from Newtown. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

About Newtown

Newtown is a small suburban area situated on the riverside in Dorset, with an elevation of around 38 metres. Newtown lies near several nearby places, including Littleton, Charlton on the Hill, and Lower Blandford St Mary, and is approximately 22 miles from the city of Salisbury. Newtown has a population of around 564 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Newtown is also relatively close to the regional centre, but still far enough from London, at a distance of around 99 miles.

The call-out around Newtown, step by step

  • We find out what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled from your tank.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what created the issue.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running properly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Newtown AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Newtown page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Newtown

What moves the figure is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Things we get about petrol in diesel in Newtown

I am on a forecourt in Newtown. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it is where a good portion of this work takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Do not switch it on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
