Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Newtown?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Newtown and the remainder of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and our engineers shall show you what comes next before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Don't crank it — and do not rely on it when it fires up. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just can't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It is not fine. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: turning it on is usually enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Do not add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Jamacia Place, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts PO12 1, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three details decide the full job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough measure of it, plus whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through that high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Portsmouth Harbour while the work happens, and we'd very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

Car parks like the one outside Waitrose are a place our engineers work in regularly, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that decides if a van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is pointing. Where our technicians cannot work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Passat we'll shift the car without running it — and that's not pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and draws more of that blend out of the tank and on to your pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a better bay has silently turned into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Haselworth Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Walpole Park, none of it is going on now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than sloppy — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi Q5, a fill-up near Gosport Methodist Church that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Newtown

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this job often starts, and where a fair part of it finishes. The drain normally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the station's consent, that's a place we work, and often.

At the forecourt, this gets caught with your motor never fired, and no place else manages it. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

The staff will generally help you push the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Starting the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Newtown plus the towns next to it

Seafield, Gosport, Forton, Camdentown, Clayhall — each of those on the runs that carry us out to Newtown as well, a new town.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most places across Hampshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Contact us and ask instead of assuming, above all where you're on the border or somewhere the satnav misreads.

Use this map for the area covered on this page. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory we serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to come to us.

Stuck by the kerbside around Newtown

Not everybody finds a sensible place to stop. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Stoke Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Sit with the vehicle if it is safe to wait in it, yet clear of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However inconvenient the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M275 comes in, under 3 miles from Newtown. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are normally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

A bit about Newtown

Newtown is a suburban area located on the coast of Hampshire, with an elevation of approximately 6 metres above sea level. Newtown sits near the city of Portsmouth, being only 1.9 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Seafield, Gosport, and Forton. Newtown has a population of around 7984 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Newtown is situated in the South East region of England, about 65.8 miles from London.

What happens when our technicians get to you around Newtown

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • That tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • When it's started, we make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Newtown is a distinct job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the fault beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Newtown page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Newtown?

What moves the figure is laid out below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Newtown

Fuel drains on a Newtown petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work happens. We attend Shell and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable much more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor stays off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists fear.
