Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Noel Park

Do not turn on your engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Noel Park and the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. We shall show you what the following step will be. Ring us — it comes before all else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That's why you never start it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: switching it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, and our team would rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Gladstone Avenue, put your hazards on then keep the car there.
  • Before you dial, get your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting N22 6 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how much, plus whether the engine has been turned over. The replies shape everything that comes after.

The journey back would more or less double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane. So leave it where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker — no one needs you hovering over the car outside Alexandra Palace whilst our engineers get it done, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

Every start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the blend out of your tank and towards your pump — which is why a motor moved twice into a better bay has gradually turned into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped. So if we can't work next to your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, we shift the vehicle without running it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Food Centre our technicians visit often, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar at the entrance settling if our van reaches you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Twenty to nine. Outside Lift Noel Park. Late already, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the engine alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a run taken in a rush asks for a great deal of that.

Out there normal, back flat. If that was the run to Russell Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Audi A4 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel Mercedes E-Class up near St Mark's a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave the vehicle off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has arrived at the filter and your pump — which is why our technicians flush the fuel lines instead of only draining that tank.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Most of the work begins at a forecourt, so a large chunk of that gets completed there. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where the drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

A forecourt is the single setting this is halted before the motor has started. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the help. Moving the car four spaces doesn't warrant cranking it.

Will we reach your side of Noel Park?

Noel Park is a residential suburb, and so our vans get out to the town and to the places by it on the usual trips: Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Tower Gardens, West Green and Hornsey.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Assuming is the thing to skip, especially on the border or somewhere your phone struggles. Phone to ask.

Look at the map for the area covered here. The vehicle does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside near Noel Park

Not everybody gets the chance to pull in somewhere safe. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Farrant Avenue because you realised after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Stay beside the vehicle while it is wise to sit inside, but out of the car if it is not. Do not fire it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where your M1 comes into it — under 10 miles from Noel Park. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are typically lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what we bring.

A bit about Noel Park

Noel Park is a suburban area in north London, situated near the banks of the River Lea and close to the cities of London and Wood Green. Noel Park has a relatively low elevation of 19 metres and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock. Noel Park is located near several local amenities, including those found in nearby Wood Green and Turnpike Lane.

Once our engineers arrive with you in Noel Park: what we do

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • That tank gets emptied of it.
  • Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's left in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Noel Park AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not crank it — but this fault is not. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Noel Park has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Noel Park

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Noel Park motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Noel Park. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A good share of this work happens there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

Don't turn it on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people assume.
