Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Nook

Never fire up your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, across Nook and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our technicians can tell you what your next step will be. Ring us — that comes before anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you never crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.
  • Never pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd much rather drive to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Haigh Moor Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Our van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts WF3 1, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has been started. The responses shape whatever follows.

The drive in is what pulled thinned diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting at Morley all day, sits dormant in that tank while it waits. Phone first — before the keys come out.

Car parks like the one outside Nisa Local are a place our engineers work in often, and the fuel is rarely the complicated part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier on the way in that determines if our van can get to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way the car is facing. If we cannot work next to the diesel Peugeot 308 we will move it without firing it — and that's not pedantry about a few seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and draws more of that mix out of that tank and on to your pump, so a car shuffled twice into a roomier bay has quietly become a bigger job than one left just where it stopped.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it will not run, and so the motorist stops there and the damage stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine starts, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be giving. That's the snag, and it is why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed completely ordinary coming back from Westerton Primary Academy. They all do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about, and so nothing warns you. Phone with about how far you drove, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up by West Ardsley Methodist Church without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and miles decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned uneven, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now sitting near Tingley Methodist Church. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully not the motor failing — and since there's no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven again before somebody calls. Do not. Switch it off and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Nook

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on the forecourt?

The job kicks off at the pump, generally. Frequently the job finishes there too. The drain typically gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's agreement, that is a place our engineers work, and regularly.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be stopped with your motor still untouched. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Coverage in Nook

Nook is a residential suburb, so our vans get out to the town and to the places by it on those same journeys: Haigh Moor, Westerton, Common Side, Upper Green and Black Gates.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Ring us and check rather than assuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever a satnav might misread.

That map shows the patch this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground we cover, and none of that asks your vehicle to move to us.

Nook: stuck wherever you parked

Not everyone has a chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Nook Green since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Safe there? Wait by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Never restart it to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into your fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under a mile out of Nook, the M62 is what counts now. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

A little about Nook

Nook is a suburban area situated near the lakeside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Nook sits at an elevation of 126 metres, close to the nearby cities of Wakefield and the surrounding countryside of Haigh Moor and Westerton. Nook is located approximately 3.8 miles from Wakefield and is part of the larger West Yorkshire urban landscape. Nook has a population of around 3129 residents, living in a predominantly suburban environment.

Once our technicians reach you around Nook: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • That tank gets cleared completely.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

At that point it is ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Nook?

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Nook has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Nook pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the price is laid out below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Nook motorists

I'm on a forecourt around Nook. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. The pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Turned off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
