Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Anston

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in North Anston or the remainder of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before everything else happens, and you will hear what happens next.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it. Started regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that reversed. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off also — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we would much rather travel to a difficult location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Chapel Rise, put your hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts S25 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has been started. The answers shape all that comes after.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the high-pressure pump in real volume on the drive in, and the drive back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Tiguan outside Kiveton Park whilst the work happens, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

You will be told to move it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside Anston Brook Primary School, a misfuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond the fuel filter on to the pump. Let them moan. Phone us.

Three replies determine much of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the car in the car park by The Cutler. Next the polluted blend comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our engineers start it and check it runs correctly before you pull away.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Hillside Park in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of it.

Emptying your Audi A3, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, purging the lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that is the job, and it's shaped by the worst of it resting in your lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to Anston Parish Hall — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our technicians work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the issue. A narrow parking spot trumps a car driven somewhere more convenient.

Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

A fair chunk of this job gets completed at the pump, as that's where it mostly begins. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that's usually where this drain takes place.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with your motor never run, and nowhere else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting it four spaces does not warrant cranking the engine.

Will our technicians reach your part of North Anston?

South Anston, Dinnington, Todwick, Laughton Common, Kiveton Park — every one of them on the rounds that take us over to North Anston too, a village.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across South Yorkshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us and enquire instead of presuming, above all when you're on the border or anywhere the satnav gets wrong.

This map outlines the patch the page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground we serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to move to us.

North Anston: stuck where you parked

Not everyone has a chance to pull over anywhere safe. A common call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Hillside or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Clear of the car when it's not sensible to be there, with it if it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. A technician heading to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, and see this

The local M1 is the road that counts here, and runs under 3 miles from North Anston. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first junction that is safe, pull up there, and never start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

What happens when we arrive with you around North Anston

  • Our technicians check what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • Our engineers drain your tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later is not the thing that started the problem.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it is fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

North Anston AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the fault under it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate North Anston page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around North Anston

We can't put one price on this page honestly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in North Anston

Fuel drains on a North Anston petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this gets done. We visit South Anston Service Station and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more often than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the car?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
