Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Field?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over North Field and the remainder of Cambridgeshire. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us and then our technicians can show you what follows from here before you attempt any more.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for precisely those components.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would much rather get to a tricky location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on The Shade, turn your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CB7 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
  • Three answers determine your whole visit: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate quantity of it, and if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Phone before you move it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and it outside Soham ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and any wear was done on the journey in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

Petrol in the Volkswagen Tiguan, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at The Co-operative Food, somewhere around North Field? Then ring us, and leave the engine out of that — not even to get out of the space. A technician heads your way. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws little, and so these are often the straightforward ones.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of The Shade Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.

Your Mercedes C-Class remains where it is in the car park at the pub in the village for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated mixture, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, your car is started and checked, and once it's running correctly you set off.

Here is the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Soham United Football Club call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without a murmur and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a big share of that closes. If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that is generally where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the one spot this gets stopped. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Take the offer. Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant firing the motor.

Coverage around North Field

These same trips carry us to Soham Cotes, Barcham Corner, Broad Hill, Soham and East Fen Common besides North Field, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Cambridgeshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the habit to avoid, especially on the boundary or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Contact us to check.

That map shows the ground this page spans. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside around North Field

Not everyone has the chance to stop anywhere safe. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge beside A142, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Out of the motor if it isn't wise to be inside, beside it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. A van heading to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

Here is where the local M11 matters, under 15 miles away from North Field. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

Where is North Field?

North Field is a suburban area located near the city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, situated in a low-lying inland region with an elevation of around 2 metres. North Field is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is close to nearby places such as Soham Cotes and Barcham Corner. North Field sits within the wider Eastern region of England, approximately 61 miles from London.

What comes next when our engineers get to you in North Field

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of the tank.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It's run with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Our engineers do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around North Field is a distinct matter

Never crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around North Field has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around North Field

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

North Field drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around North Field, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more often than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
