Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Florida?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across North Florida and the rest of Merseyside, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One ring our way is sufficient: our team shall tell you what happens next. Do that straight away.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And once started, never believe it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we would much rather travel to an odd spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on North Florida Road, turn the hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning WA11 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • What was put in, about how much, plus if the engine has run — the three answers shape the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at the pump, generally. Often enough the work ends there too. We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Asda that is generally where the drain takes place.

The forecourt is the only setting this is stopped before your motor has fired. We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the help. Rolling it four spaces doesn't justify cranking the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in North Florida

The phone call we like runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off outside Aldi. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Haydock English Martyrs' Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave the ignition alone, and phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Mercedes C-Class or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the drive to Pewfall Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the close tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Ford Kuga covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it afterwards. Then call us about the Audi Q5 near St. James the Great, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly no one can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that's the advice you'll get, normally from someone certain, and it's only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia near Haydock Library and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What happens next is the problem: the engine at once sucks the petrol left waiting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. We flush your system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being put right and your car just starting.

Can our technicians reach your end of North Florida?

North Florida is a residential suburb, so our vans go out to the town and to the villages around it on the same runs: New Boston, Haydock, Pewfall, Stanley Bank and Blackbrook.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most locations in Merseyside have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Phone and enquire instead of guessing, particularly where you are on a border or somewhere the satnav can't find.

The map marks the area the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that asks your vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded by the kerbside anywhere in North Florida?

The opportunity to stop anywhere sensible does not come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge on Haydock Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Remain with it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Never restart it to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the system. However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Driven it already? Stop, and check below

This is where your M6 comes in, under 3 miles out of North Florida. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

Where's North Florida?

North Florida is close to nearby places such as New Boston, Haydock, and Pewfall, and is about 172.9 miles from London.

What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in North Florida

  • The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

Then it is ready to set off. There's no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in North Florida is a distinct problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this problem isn't. Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate North Florida page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around North Florida

What shifts the price is laid out below, since this job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

North Florida motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in North Florida?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place. Often, provided the site agrees: Costco Fuel, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Don't switch your engine back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
