North Inch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in North Inch or the rest of Perth and Kinross, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us before anything else happens, so you will hear what happens after that.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you do not fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
- Do not pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Kestrel Way? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.
- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode starting PH1 5 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.
- What was put in, about how much, and whether your car has started — the three answers shape your whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
The journey back would about double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Tiguan. So keep it where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's handier — no one needs you standing over your car outside Perth whilst our engineers get on, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.
Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in the Ford Focus seems like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel to demand — while a frantic morning drive demands plenty.
Risk the trip home from King James? Don't. It will start and it will drive off just fine, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves typically while grinding the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Peugeot 3008 then phone us.
Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, since a diesel Mercedes E-Class left at North Inch Golf Course is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.
A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and the diesel Kia Sportage is parked up near Black Watch Stone of Remembrance. The motor is not giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours normally get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then ring us.
At a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
The job kicks off at the pump, mostly. Often enough the work finishes on site as well. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that is generally where the drain happens — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.
Nowhere else but a garage can this be spotted with the engine still unrun. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.
Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.
Service around North Inch
Those same journeys carry us to Quarrymill, Muirton, Perth, Gannochy and Bridgend besides North Inch, which is a residential suburb.
Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most locations across Perth and Kinross have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Call us to check rather than guessing, above all where you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.
The patch the page spans is on the map. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.
North Inch: broken down where you stopped
Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in. If you noticed after setting off and finished up along the verge beside Lark Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.
Clear of the motor if it isn't wise to wait in it, beside it when it is. Do not fire up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into your fuel system. However difficult the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.
Driven it already? Pull over, and see below
Here is where your M90 matters, under 3 miles out of North Inch. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under a mile to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring differs.
A little about North Inch
North Inch is a suburban area located on the banks of the River Tay in Perth, with a mix of residential and recreational spaces. North Inch sits at a low elevation of around 13 metres, offering views of the surrounding cityscape and the river. North Inch is close to the city centre of Perth, with nearby neighbourhoods including Quarrymill and Muirton, and is characterized by predominantly flat-type housing.
What we do when our technicians get to you in North Inch
- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- We clear that tank of all the contaminated fuel.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- After it's turned on, we make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you're ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in North Inch?
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this problem underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own North Inch page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in North Inch?
Our engineers can't put one number on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from North Inch motorists
I'm on a forecourt in North Inch. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It isn't a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it after that.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Do not switch the car on again.
If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect.
