Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Leith?
With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over North Leith and the rest of City of Edinburgh, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. We will tell you what the next stage is. Call us — it comes before everything else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for several miles. People get that muddled. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Our team would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Newhaven Road, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning EH6 4 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the motor has fired. Those three replies shape your whole call-out.
Quarter past eight. A quick fill on the trip in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Renault Megane has sat at Edinburgh Waverley for three hours. Phone and leave it where it is. What matters is the journey in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — lubricates your pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles worked the pump on a fluid stripped of much of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are till our technicians arrive.
Your pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Newhaven Park, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.
Phoning from close to Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped bay than a car someone has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Ford Kuga, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not that tank.
The smaller petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not slapdash. Strange locations see most of it for that reason. So: topped up close to War Memorial without thinking, in a diesel Volvo XC60 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and miles settles how much petrol ends up at the injectors.
That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine failing — and with no warning light for it, motors in that position typically get driven a second time before somebody phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Peugeot 5008 now resting close to Anchor. Switch the vehicle off then call us.
Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt
Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, which means a large part of it is done there. Still at Asda? Then that is typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.
At a forecourt, this gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not merit starting the motor.
North Leith and the villages near it
Newhaven, Trinity, Hamilton Wynd, Leith, Bonnington — all of those on our trips that carry us out to North Leith itself, a residential suburb.
Our technicians still come. Those names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places across City of Edinburgh, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Ring us to check instead of assuming — borders particularly, and wherever a satnav may struggle with.
The map shows the ground the page includes. Your vehicle never needs to come to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stuck by the kerbside in North Leith
Not everyone has the opportunity to stop somewhere suitable. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Hawthornvale since you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.
Whether you wait by the car or keep clear of it hangs on if being there feels sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. We will send our van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that's a lot better than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has rolled
Here is where your M8 comes into it — under 10 miles away from North Leith. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Get off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.
North Leith itself
North Leith is a coastal suburban area in the City of Edinburgh, situated approximately 1.7 miles from Edinburgh city centre. North Leith sits at a relatively low elevation of 22 metres, with its landscape shaped by the Firth of Forth coastline. North Leith is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing, which reflects the area's urban development. North Leith is close to nearby places such as Newhaven, Trinity, and Hamilton Wynd.
What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in North Leith
- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- The polluted fuel is pulled out of that tank.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
- Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
- After it is started, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
North Leith AdBlue removal is a different job
The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own North Leith page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in North Leith?
Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from North Leith motorists
Fuel drains on a North Leith petrol station forecourt
Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission we work at BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than motorists expect.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Your pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
Still with your vehicle?
Switched off is how the car stays.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
