Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Lopham?
Don't start your engine. If the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, throughout North Lopham and the remainder of Norfolk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Call us before everything else begins, so you will learn what follows next.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And if started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
- Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
- Don't dilute it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Tanns Lane, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning IP22 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has fired. These three facts settle the whole visit.
Quarter past eight. A rushed fill on the trip in. Somewhere around eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Eccles Road for three hours. Call us then keep the car where it stands. What is key is the trip in, as diesel both burns and — before that — greases your pump and the injectors, but petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a fuel stripped of a lot of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about miles rather than hours standing, and hence the request to leave your keys be till we arrive.
Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at The Co-operative Food now. Time elapsed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.
You'll be told to shift the car clear of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags at St Andrew's CofE VA Primary School, Lopham, a misfuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the filter toward the pump. Let them moan. Phone.
Three answers settle much of the work: what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at your car in the car park outside The King's Head. Next the polluted mix comes out of your tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When clean diesel is in and the system bled, our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before you pull away.
Someone certain will tell you to drain the car and put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volvo XC60 near The Lophams' Village Hall and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through the pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. The circuit gets purged, the filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that just starts.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Plenty of the job begins at the pump, so a large portion of it ends up done at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf Oil, that's normally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.
At a garage, the mistake is spotted with the engine never fired, and no place else does that. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle is.
The staff will normally offer to push the car out from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Rolling it four spaces does not warrant cranking the engine.
Service around North Lopham
Those same runs carry us to Kenninghall Heath, South Lopham, The Ling, Guilt Cross and Dam Green besides North Lopham, which is a rural village.
If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for most locations in Norfolk, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Phone and enquire rather than guessing, particularly when you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles with.
That map shows the area the page spans. The car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
North Lopham: broken down wherever you pulled up
Some people have no suitable spot to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge of Meadow Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us and not an unusual one.
Stay beside the vehicle if it is sensible to be there, but out of it if it isn't. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. A technician heading to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone
Your M11 is the one that matters here, and it sits under 50 miles from North Lopham. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.
Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and never restart the car to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring differs.
A little about North Lopham
North Lopham is a rural village in the heart of Norfolk, situated approximately 19.8 miles southwest of Norwich. North Lopham lies in a gently undulating landscape at an elevation of around 54 metres, with nearby Kenninghall Heath and The Ling providing areas of heathland and woodland. North Lopham has a population of around 673 people, predominantly living in detached houses.
What we do when our engineers reach you around North Lopham
- The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
- That tank gets emptied of everything.
- Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the trouble.
- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
North Lopham AdBlue removal is a different problem
The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate North Lopham page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around North Lopham
What shifts the figure is listed below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.
North Lopham motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I am on a forecourt in North Lopham. Can you drain the vehicle here?
A good portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and the car, still together?
Turned off is the way it remains.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
