The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Lynn
Whatever you do, don't switch your engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave it off. Cleared then rinsed, just where it is: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes ahead more than on anything else. Anywhere you are around North Lynn, this is the order things run from now.
Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
Do the following first, in this order.
- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, so leave the vehicle alone entirely.
- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
- Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the mistake. At a forecourt, roll the car away from the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to help.
- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that is where our first question starts. Don't bin it.
Still driving when you noticed? Come off the A1(M) at the next junction if that is where you are, under 50 miles from North Lynn, and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.
The fork in each North Lynn fuel drain: has it run yet?
One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.
If it has not once been started:
- All the petrol remains inside the tank, and just there.
- Where the car sits is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.
- Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.
Engine run, even briefly?
- Petrol has been pulled out of that tank, past the filter then into the fuel lines.
- Run it further and that petrol gets to the injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
- The farther it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, the filter, and now and then more besides.
Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not. A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol begins wearing down whatever moves it.
North Lynn, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call
Get ready a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.
- PE30 2 plus the rest of the postcode makes the best way to start telling us where you are.
- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Le Strange Avenue or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
- Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, such as the one at Ratinda Extra.
- The make and model of your car, and the fact it is a diesel.
- Which went in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and North Lynn has a page for it. So tell us.
- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.
- Whose motor it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before we get there than after.
Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — works as well.
Waiting for a fuel drain in North Lynn: what to do
In the wait, the harm comes from kindly meant help — so these count.
- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it sits, wait with it.
- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of it gets the petrol back out.
- A DIY drain leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.
- Ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.
When our van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step
- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those answers decide this job, and that's why you get a quote after them rather than before.
- Draining it is how that blend gets taken out of that tank.
- Petrol that has moved beyond that tank sits in the lines if it ran, and the lines are flushed to clear it.
- The fuel filter is seen to. Cleared, or swapped where your car has a usable one.
- Bleeding the system comes once clean diesel is in.
- Our technicians start the engine only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the fuel system, then make sure that it's running correctly.
Until it runs on clean diesel, our engineers stay with it. When it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual, and your car returns to normal use straight away.
After the fuel drain: back on the road around North Lynn
- Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Just drive normally.
- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then call us back.
- Your paperwork answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
