North Moor: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't start the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, all over North Moor and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. We can explain what the next move will be. Ring us — it goes before all else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that backwards. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Switching your ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would rather get to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Westwood Drive, switch those hazards on and keep it there.
- Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode starting OL9 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.
- What got in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run — those three facts shape the entire visit. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the injection pump in real volume on the drive in, and the trip back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf outside Mills Hill whilst the work goes on, and our team would far rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.
Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Westwood Academy. They always do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it mostly won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing tells you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about. Phone with roughly how far you drove and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.
You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on fresh diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park by Sun Mill Inn, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, your lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when we get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Berrisfield Park went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us.
Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take your filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you will get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Volvo XC60 by OBA Millenium Cultural Centre and it'll start, which is precisely why the tip sounds reasonable. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, since draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.
Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?
Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a big chunk of it finishes. Still at Tesco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.
Nowhere but a forecourt can it be spotted with the motor still cold. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting it four spaces does not justify firing it.
Service around North Moor
North Moor is a residential suburb, and our vans are out to the town and to anywhere near it on those same rounds: Westwood, Busk, Chadderton, Burnley Brow and Cold Hurst.
Our technicians still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most places across Greater Manchester, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on the border or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us and ask.
This map shows the area the page includes. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.
Stuck at the kerbside in North Moor
Not everybody gets a chance to pull over anywhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Prospect Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a normal call for us and not a rare one.
Remain beside your car if it's safe to wait there, but out of the vehicle if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll send the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under a mile from North Moor, the Broadway is what counts now. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not start it to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what we bring.

What we do when our engineers reach you around North Moor
- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
- We clean the lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what caused the trouble.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.
After that it is ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in North Moor?
Never fire it up: that opening instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate North Moor page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around North Moor
Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank takes.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Petrol in diesel questions from North Moor motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in North Moor?
Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this takes place. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more commonly than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
Still with your car?
Turned off is how the car remains.
If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear.
