Petrol in Diesel

North Queensferry: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across North Queensferry and the remainder of Fife, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. We will tell you what the following move is. Call us — that goes before anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And having started, do not trust it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would much rather drive to an awkward location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Old Kirk Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Before you dial, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts KY11 1 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how much, plus if the motor has started. These three answers shape your whole call-out.

Quarter past eight. A fast fill-up on the drive in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has stood outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone then leave the car where it sits. What counts is the drive in, because diesel both burns and — before that — protects the pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles ran your pump on a liquid stripped of much of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the question about miles rather than hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave the keys where they are till we arrive.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. Your Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

What we will ask about is whether that run there was brief and cold, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and what doesn't burn can work past the piston rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Audi A4 sitting in the parking area outside the pub in the village with a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens as it stands, so leave it there overnight then phone us first thing.

Emptying the Mercedes E-Class, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it waiting in the lines instead of in the tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to War Memorial — which side the filler is on, whether a van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location we work, so the place itself is rarely the problem. A cramped parking space is better than a car driven somewhere more handy.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the damage waits by this point, and a diesel Volkswagen Touran that got close to Forth Bridges Light House Museum needs the circuit flushed instead of drained.

Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a good share of it finishes. The drain normally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's agreement, that's somewhere we work, and routinely.

At the forecourt, it is caught with the motor never run, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car sits.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Well worth it. Moving it four lengths does not justify cranking it.

North Queensferry plus the villages beside it

The same journeys get us to Jamestown, Inverkeithing, Port Edgar, Queensferry and Rosyth as well as North Queensferry, which is a coastal village.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around Fife, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Call us to enquire instead of presuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever a satnav might get wrong.

The area this page includes sits on the map. The lot is ground we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down at the roadside around North Queensferry

Some people have no safe place to pull in at all. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge of Main Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Okay right there? Sit with it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the system with every mile covered. Driving on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward place, and that is no problem for us.

Run it already? Pull in, and read below

Here is where the local Queensferry Crossing comes into it — under a mile from North Queensferry. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and never start it to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in the van.

What follows when we arrive with you around North Queensferry

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • Your tank is emptied completely.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

North Queensferry AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — yet this fault isn't. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around North Queensferry has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around North Queensferry?

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in North Queensferry

Fuel drains on a North Queensferry petrol station forecourt

A fair share of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's permission we work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the car?

Turned off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
