Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Northam? Don't Start It
With that tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Northam and the remainder of Devon, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us and our technicians shall explain what comes next before you try any more.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, don't believe it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather come to an odd spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on The Square, put your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting EX39 1 — that's what determines whether the technician turns up or circles.
- What went in, about how many litres, and whether your car has fired — the three replies decide the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Audi A4 sitting at Barnstaple this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through the pump was the trip in. Phone us before you head off to collect it.
It will start. It will pull away quite happily. That is the problem, since a diesel on a weakened tank behaves typically whilst wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not chance the trip home from Kingsley Inn — leave the Vauxhall Astra and ring us.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through — that is the entire process. It explains the usual Bone Hill call too: a diesel BMW X1 that went out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Leave the Citroen C3 near St Margaret's Church and phone us. We are blunt about not driving on since a wearing pump loses, and what it sheds moves on with your fuel to the injectors beyond it.
By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Polo that got close to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses needs the circuit flushed, not emptied.
Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?
The job starts at the pump, mostly. Quite often the work ends on site as well. If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that is typically where this drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.
At a garage, this gets spotted with your engine never run, and no place else manages that. We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what determine that.
Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the assistance. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
Places our vans serve in Northam
Northam is a coastal town, and our vans go out to the town and to the places near it on the same runs: Diddywell, Silford, Raleigh Estate, Westward Ho! and Buckleigh.
There are separate pages for the majority of places around Devon, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing about whether our technicians come. Ring us to check rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever your phone can struggle with.
The map is the patch the page spans. The vehicle never needs to move to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stranded on the kerbside anywhere around Northam?
Not everybody gets a chance to pull in anywhere sensible. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Tower Street since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.
Fine where you are? Sit by it. Not okay? Step out and away from it. Don't start up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult location, and that is no problem for us.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
This is where your M5 comes in — under 50 miles from Northam. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are normally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Do not start it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible exit then switch off. Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in the van.

The job in Northam, step by step
- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
- The tainted fuel is drawn out of your tank.
- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- We start the car and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
That has the car ready to set off. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.
Northam AdBlue removal is a separate matter
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — do not fire it up — yet the fault is not. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Northam page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Northam prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.
Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it's not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Northam
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Northam?
A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no. Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Don't turn the engine on again.
Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
