Petrol in Diesel

Northgate: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on your engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, all over Northgate and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our team can show you what the next move will be. Contact us — this comes before all else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And once started, don't believe it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Thomas Street? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting HX4 9 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the car has started. These three replies decide the whole visit.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A good share of this job is done at the pump, as that is where it often starts. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at JET that's normally where this drain takes place.

At a garage, the mistake is caught with your motor never started, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the car sits.

The attendants will normally happily move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Northgate

The tricky part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that determines whether our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Aldi, say how much clearance there's about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers attend often. Should there be no space to work beside your diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture leaves the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have gradually made a harder job of what was just a motor standing still.

Hazards on. Motor off. Phone us. It's twenty to nine outside Holywell Green Primary School, you are late, and the till receipt reads unleaded — and although three miles in the BMW 3 Series feels like nothing, fuel gets delivered to demand, and a hurried run demands plenty of it.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving your engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it runs through — that is the whole process. It accounts for the normal Shaw Park call too: a diesel Ford Focus that went out without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Leave the Dacia Duster close to Stainland and Holywell Green United Reformed Church and phone us. We're blunt about not driving on as a wearing pump sheds, and what it sheds moves onward with the fuel to your injectors further along.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel Vauxhall Astra near St. Helen's Well. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. Our technicians ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Northgate and the villages near it

Holywell Green, Jagger Green, Old Lindley, Little Bradley, Stainland — every one of them on our journeys that carry us over to Northgate as well, a small village.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places across West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Near the border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.

See the map for the ground shown on this page. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside breakdowns around Northgate

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over whatsoever. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Oakes Gardens because you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Wait with the car while it is safe to wait inside, yet clear of the car if it's not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. Our van heading to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where the Outlane Interchange comes in, under 3 miles away from Northgate. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

About Northgate

Northgate is a locality situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 1678 residents. Northgate sits at an elevation of 156 metres, approximately 9.3 miles from Bradford and 166.6 miles from London. Northgate is close to nearby places such as Holywell Green, Jagger Green, and Old Lindley, and forms part of the wider urban area.

What comes next when we get to you in Northgate

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • Away flows the tainted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Once it's turned on, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northgate

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Northgate page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Northgate costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Northgate drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Northgate. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Often, provided the site agrees: Scientific Lubricants, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more regularly than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers fear.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Northgate and throughout West Yorkshire.
