Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Northport?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Northport or the remainder of Dorset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. One call our way is enough: our technicians can tell you what follows next. Try it first.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the car. And having started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Admirals Way, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting BH20 4 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. The responses determine all that comes after.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Skoda Octavia parked outside Wareham this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed weakened diesel through the pump was the drive in. Phone before you head off to fetch the vehicle.

Someone will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series on the zig-zags at Wareham St Mary Church of England Primary School is a nuisance; the same motor restarted three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol past the filter then into your pump. Leave it there, let everyone moan, and give us a call.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the entire process, and it accounts for the usual Northmoor Park call: a diesel Ford Kuga that drove out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

A vehicle you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the narrower petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, close to The Catholic Church of St. Edward, King and Martyr or not, and we'll get to the Volkswagen Touran.

By this point your tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Mercedes GLC that got by Wareham Town Walls and Castle Remains needs your circuit cleared, not cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Northport

Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

A large share of this work ends up completed at the pump, since that's where it usually starts. The drain typically takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's agreement, that's a place we work, and regularly.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the single setting this ends up spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Coverage around Northport

Being a coastal area, Northport sees a frequent call, while its neighbours round about come along on the same run: Wareham and Sandford, Sandford Woods and Ridge, Stoborough.

There are pages for most locations across Dorset, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing at all about if our engineers come. Contact us and check rather than presuming, above all where you're on the boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

The ground the page includes is on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground we cover, and none of it requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Stuck on the roadside near Northport

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere safe. A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge beside Northport Drive or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Remain with your car if it is sensible to sit inside, yet out of it when it isn't. Never start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system. However awkward the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the M27 comes in, under 50 miles from Northport. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

Where's Northport?

Northport is a small coastal locality in Dorset, situated near the towns of Wareham and Salisbury, with Sandford and Sandford Woods nearby. Northport has a population of around 897 people and is characterised by detached housing. Northport sits at a low elevation of 4 metres above sea level, close to the sea. Northport is located approximately 102.6 miles from London, making it a relatively remote part of the South West region.

The job in Northport, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians drain that tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northport is a separate job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Northport page. Both are ours to deal with.

Northport pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Northport

I'm on a forecourt around Northport. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit Murco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
