Norton Bridge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Norton Bridge and the remainder of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Ring us before everything else happens, and you will hear what comes next.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so never pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would much rather travel to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is easier to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Stone Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting ST15 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Three facts determine the entire job: the fuel you poured in, the rough measure of it, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Much of this work begins at a forecourt, so a fair share of it is finished there. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at BP that's usually where this drain gets done.

The forecourt is the one location the mistake is stopped before the motor has fired. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll it. Worth it. Starting it over four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Norton Bridge

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at light throttle draws little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Peugeot 308 somewhere around Norton Bridge, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded outside The Co-operative Food — phone us. Getting out of that space isn't worth a restart. Your tank gets cleared where it sits, the lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and you get home.

Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Audi A4 will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Springfields First School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

It will fire up. It will move off quite happily. That is the trouble, as a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally while grinding the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never chance the trip home from The Railway Inn — leave the Mercedes E-Class and phone us.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that trip to Stone Golf Centre went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further the BMW 5 Series drove, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.

Strange places are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the narrower petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up by Izaak Walton's Cottage without thinking, in a diesel Seat Leon you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage is what determines how much petrol reaches your injectors.

Norton Bridge and the places next to it

Norton Bridge is a village, and so our technicians head out to it and to the places near it on the usual rounds: Shallowford, Chebsey, Cold Norton, Yarnfield and Coldmeece.

There are separate pages for nearly all towns in Staffordshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Contact us and enquire rather than presuming, especially if you are on the border or somewhere your phone gets wrong.

The area this page includes appears on our map. Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the kerbside anywhere in Norton Bridge?

Not everybody finds a sensible spot to stop. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Station Road since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Okay right there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Our van driving to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for your car than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M6 is the road that counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Norton Bridge. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Pull off at the next safe exit then turn off. It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Where is Norton Bridge?

Norton Bridge is a small village in Staffordshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 88 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Norton Bridge lies near the villages of Shallowford and Chebsey, and is approximately 10 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Norton Bridge has a population of around 563 people, and its location near the River Sow makes it a notable point in the local landscape. Norton Bridge is also relatively close to the village of Cold Norton, although it is some distance from major urban centres, being 128 miles from London.

Our visit in Norton Bridge, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what created the trouble, and so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.
  • Our engineers put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Norton Bridge

Do not fire it up: that opening step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Norton Bridge page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Norton Bridge pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We can't put one number on this page frankly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Norton Bridge drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Norton Bridge?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, as we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists fear.
