Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Norton? Don't Start It
Do not fire up your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Norton and the rest of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so our technicians shall show you what follows from here before you try much else.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never start it — and do not rely on it when it starts. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It is not fine. It is grinding the fuel system while you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Elmside? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning GL2 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been started. Those replies settle all that happens next.
Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on a forecourt?
Pumps are where the work usually starts, and where a large share of that closes. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at Valero that's generally where the drain takes place.
At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with your motor never started, and no place else does that. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.
Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the assistance. Cranking the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.
Service in Norton
Norton is a village, and our technicians are out to it and to the villages near it on the usual trips: Bishops Norton, Priors Norton, Twigworth, Wallsworth and Down Hatherley.
Our technicians still come. Those names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Gloucestershire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to a boundary, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.
See the map for the ground covered on this page. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.
Roadside call-outs around Norton
Not everyone finds a safe spot to stop. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Wainlode Lane because you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.
Whether you remain beside your car or keep away from it depends on if sitting nearby feels wise. Do not restart the motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the system. Driving on does your car far more harm than our van heading out to an awkward location, and that is no bother for us.
A diesel Nissan Qashqai in the car park by New Dawn Inn with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody takes it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight and call us first thing. Nothing worsens whilst it sits. What we will ask about is if the run there was short and chilly, as that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the sump.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Ford Focus went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the trip to Young Croft Brake went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then ring us.
Phoning from close to Norton Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we would much rather have a narrow spot than a car somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Mercedes C-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not the tank.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the BMW 1 Series near Saint Mary.
Drain it and put clean diesel in — that is the advice you will get, typically from somebody confident, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Vauxhall Astra near Nature in Art and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound plausible. What occurs next is the issue: the motor straight away pulls the petrol still sitting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. We flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car simply starting.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 3 miles from Norton, the local M5 is what matters now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.
Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.
Norton itself
Norton is a small village in Gloucestershire, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 22 metres. Norton lies close to the city of Gloucester, approximately 3.8 miles away, and is part of a network of nearby settlements including Bishops Norton and Priors Norton. Norton has a population of around 542 people, predominantly living in detached houses.
What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Norton
- The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
- The contaminated mixture is pulled from that tank.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- After it's started, we check it runs smoothly on new diesel.
That has the car ready to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Norton
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't start it — but this fault isn't. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.
AdBlue removal in Norton has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Norton?
Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What changes it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Norton
Fuel drains on a Norton petrol station forecourt
A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. We visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more often than drivers assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Leave the engine switched off.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect.
