Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Notting Hill? Don't Start It

Do not start the engine. While the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Notting Hill and the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Phone before all else starts, so you will hear what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Do not start the car. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd sooner travel to a tricky location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Stanley Crescent, switch the hazards on then keep the car there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting W11 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Three details settle the whole call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the rough volume of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

The trip in is what pushed thinned diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sitting at Shepherds Bush all day, sits harmless in that tank while it waits. Phone first — before the keys turn.

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our technicians want sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off at Oksa Quality Food.

You will be urged to shift it out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags by Colville Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the fuel filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Arundel and Ladbroke Gardens call ends better than it sounds: a diesel BMW 1 Series drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision parts it flows through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than slapdash — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 208, a fill-up close to Sir William Ramsay that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Notting Hill

Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where this work mostly starts, and where a fair part of that ends. The drain generally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Power? Given the site's consent, that is a place we work, and routinely.

No place other than the forecourt can this be caught with the engine still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth it. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Service near Notting Hill

Notting Hill is a residential suburb, so we head out to it and to the places around it on those same rounds: North Kensington, Holland Park, Kensal Town, White City and Westbourne Green.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns in Greater London, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Phone and check instead of presuming — borders above all, and anywhere a satnav tends to get wrong.

Use the map for the patch covered here. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to come to us.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Notting Hill?

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge on Lansdowne Crescent or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Safe right there? Stay by it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, and see this

The M4 is the one which matters here, and lies under 5 miles from Notting Hill. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.

Where's Notting Hill?

Notting Hill is a densely populated suburban area in west London, situated approximately 3.4 miles from the city centre. Notting Hill sits at an elevation of around 35 metres, near the neighbouring areas of North Kensington, Holland Park, and Kensal Town. Notting Hill is characterized by its predominantly flat-based housing stock, which accommodates a population of around 23,819 residents. Notting Hill remains a vibrant and diverse community, with a mix of local amenities and cultural attractions.

Our call-out in Notting Hill, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that caused the trouble.
  • We pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. We do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Notting Hill AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it's a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Notting Hill has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Notting Hill

One figure wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Notting Hill

Fuel drains on a Notting Hill petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work happens. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more often than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Your engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Notting Hill and across Greater London.
