Petrol in Diesel

Oakley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Oakley or the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us so we can explain what happens after that before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Do not start the vehicle — and never trust it if it does start. That is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for a few miles. It's not all right. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we would much rather come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Oakley Lane, turn your hazards on then keep it there.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts RG23 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how much, and also whether the motor has fired. These three answers shape your whole call-out.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Overton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked weakened diesel through the pump was the run in. Phone before you go to fetch the vehicle.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Oakley Infant School, running late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — and a rushed morning drive demands plenty.

Seldom the trouble, the place. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from close to Oakley Methodist Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Dacia Duster gets drained, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole system — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that's a misfilled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what is wrong. Never start it to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, close to Saint Leonard's Centre or anywhere else.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is parked up near Saint Leonard's Church. The engine isn't packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours usually get driven once more before anybody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then call us.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The work starts at a forecourt, usually. Often enough the work finishes there as well. Still at Sainsbury's? Then that's normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

The forecourt is the single setting the mistake gets stopped before your motor has started. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Areas we serve in Oakley

East Oakley, Church Oakley, Clarken Green, Pardown, Newfound — each of them on our journeys that bring us across to Oakley as well, a rural village.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places across Hampshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. On a boundary, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Ring us to enquire rather than guessing.

The map shows the patch the page includes. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to travel to us.

Oakley: stranded where you parked

A chance to pull in anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody. A common call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge of Croft Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Whether you remain beside the motor or move clear of it hangs on whether being there feels safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then read below

This is where your M3 counts, under 3 miles away from Oakley. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Oakley itself

Oakley is a village in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of 117 metres, with Oakley being one of several nearby settlements including East Oakley and Church Oakley. Oakley lies approximately 14 miles from Winchester and 49 miles from London, with Oakley having a population of around 2262 people. Oakley is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, with Oakley retaining a rural feel despite its proximity to larger urban areas.

What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Oakley

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • That tank gets drained of everything.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Oakley AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

Don't start it: that opening rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Oakley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Oakley

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what varies it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Oakley drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Oakley, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with the car?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
