Petrol in a Diesel Car in Old Clee

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Old Clee and the remainder of Lincolnshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Phone before anything else starts, so you will hear what follows next.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And having started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Lichfield Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting DN32 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • Three facts settle your whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the rough quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big portion of the job ends up done at a forecourt, as that's where it usually kicks off. If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that's typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

Before the engine has started — a garage is the only spot this gets stopped. Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Coverage in Old Clee

Those same runs take us to Weelsby, Holme Hill, Grant Thorold, Cleethorpes and East Marsh along with Old Clee, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations in Lincolnshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing at all about whether we come. Contact us and ask instead of presuming, particularly when you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav gets wrong.

The map marks the ground the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we cover, and none of it needs the vehicle to move to us.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Old Clee Primary Academy, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone. Three miles in the Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — while a frantic morning run needs plenty.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us. Happy on the way out to Cleethorpes Town FC, Linden Homes Club, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Audi A4 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is upstream of the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off onward with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Vauxhall Insignia close to Carr Lane Social Club.

Unfamiliar locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Holy Trinity and St Mary the Virgin without thinking, in a diesel Skoda Superb you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and distance is what settles how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

Your filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that's where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Citroen C4 that made it close to King George V stadium needs your system cleared instead of cleared.

Old Clee: stuck where you parked

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone. A routine call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge of Rosina Grove South or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Safe there? Remain by it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. Never fire it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. A van coming to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the M180 comes in — under 15 miles away from Old Clee. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the next sensible junction then switch off. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

All about Old Clee

Old Clee is a suburban area on the coast of Lincolnshire, situated near the towns of Weelsby and Holme Hill. Old Clee lies at a low elevation of around 3 metres, close to the North Sea coast and approximately 17 miles from Kingston upon Hull. Old Clee has a population of around 5259 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Old Clee is part of the larger urban area surrounding Kingston upon Hull, but retains its own distinct character.

What we do when we arrive with you in Old Clee

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Old Clee?

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Old Clee has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Old Clee

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Old Clee

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Old Clee?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more regularly than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave the car turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
