Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Old Leake

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Old Leake and the remainder of Lincolnshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before anything else happens, so you'll learn what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not fire it up — and do not depend on it when it does start. That is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just can't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: switching it on is often all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Don't add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Road, anywhere — an awkward location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never moved.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts PE22 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has run. These three facts shape the whole call-out.

Call us before you collect the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle at Boston ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any damage happened on the run in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Old Leake Primary Academy, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Your pump rests ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a worn-out one loses travels downstream with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Phone us, then leave your diesel Dacia Duster where it is near St. Mary.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the narrower petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near Old Leake Community Centre without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and miles is what decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody rings. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Ford Kuga is now resting by Moat House. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of an engine giving up. Turn off. Call us.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel on a forecourt?

It kicks off at the pump, generally. Quite often the work finishes there as well. The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Gulf? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it is halted with your motor never run, and nowhere else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the help. Firing it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Old Leake plus the towns next to it

Old Leake is a rural village, and our team are out to it and to the villages by it on those same journeys: Leake Fold Hill, Wrangle, Leverton Outgate, Leverton and Leake Hurns End.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most places in Lincolnshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on the border or somewhere your satnav fails. Contact us and check.

Look at the map for the ground included on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers serve, and none of that asks the vehicle to come to us.

Broken down at the roadside near Old Leake

Not everyone gets a suitable place to pull over. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge on Lychgate view, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Okay where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Don't restart the motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward place, and that is no problem for us.

Driven it already? Pull in, and read below

Here is where the local A1(M) counts, under 50 miles from Old Leake. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

A bit about Old Leake

Old Leake is a village in Lincolnshire, situated in the East Midlands region of England, with a population of around 1173 people. Old Leake lies near the villages of Wrangle and Leverton Outgate, and is close to Leake Fold Hill. Old Leake has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the village is located at a low elevation of around 6 metres above sea level. Old Leake is approximately 29.9 miles from the city of Lincoln and 105.7 miles from London.

What our technicians do when we reach you in Old Leake

  • The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • The tank is emptied completely.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.

At that point it is ready to set off. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Old Leake?

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Old Leake page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Old Leake?

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Old Leake

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Old Leake?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then keep it off. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
