Petrol in a Diesel Car in Old Swan: What Happens Now

Not for a moment, and not to move it: your engine remains off. Pause there. Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done where the car sits, and what you do in the next few minutes determines that far more than anything else. Wherever you are around Old Swan, here is how things run from now.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this sequence, all before everything else:

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank into the components it damages.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it only makes you with extra of the same blend.
  • Hazards on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • However short the distance, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, push it away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the attendants to help.
  • Keep the till receipt. It says which fuel got in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M62, under a mile from Old Swan, that means the next exit. Step one comes next.

Old Swan fuel drain: has the motor run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • The petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is normally all of it.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

Engine run, even briefly?

  • Some petrol has left that tank by now, gone through the fuel filter, and reached the lines.
  • A bigger run carries it all the way to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
  • The further it went, the larger the job — the fuel lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Old Swan

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning L13 5 serves best.
  • A road name helps: Aylesford Road, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Aldi, for example — and it's much quicker to find.
  • That it is a diesel, along with the make and model of the car.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Old Swan, and so say which.
  • The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.
  • The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before our technicians get there.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

The wait for a Old Swan fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Stay with the car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a few yards.
  • Anything from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • A home-made drain misses your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky too.
  • Not for your radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.

The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

  • Three queries. What got in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies set this job, which is why the quote comes after them but not before.
  • Your tank is drained. The contaminated mixture comes out of that tank.
  • Purging the lines follows, because a car that ran has petrol past your tank, inside your lines themselves.
  • Your filter is seen to. Cleared, or replaced where the vehicle has a serviceable one.
  • Clean diesel in, and your system primed.
  • Starting the car. When the fuel system is primed with new diesel, our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly.

Only once it's running on clean diesel do our engineers leave. It is very unusual for a car spotted soon to be left with long-term damage, and normal use resumes at once.

Once the fuel drain is done: driving in Old Swan a second time

  • Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.
  • Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, so keep your documents.
  • Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
