Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Orchard Hill? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Orchard Hill and the rest of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. A single call our way will be plenty: our team will show you what comes next. Do it first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the vehicle. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Newbridge Close? Hazards on, and leave it there. A tricky location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting EX39 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • What went in, approximately how much, plus if your car has started — these three details determine your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real volume on the way in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over the Renault Megane at Barnstaple while the work goes on, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Hazards on. Motor off. Phone. It is twenty to nine by St Mary's CofE Primary School, you're late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and though three miles in the Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, fuel is supplied to demand, and a frantic run needs plenty of it.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and moves off perfectly well. Risk the journey home from The Rose Salterne? Not a chance. Call us then leave the Audi A4 where it sits.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off and phone us. Fine on the way out to King George V Playing Fields, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Dacia Duster travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Rarely the issue, the location. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from close to Burton at Bideford, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 1 Series gets emptied, your filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of this job gets completed at the pump, since that's where it often begins. We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Morrisons that is typically where the drain gets done.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never run, and no place else manages that. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Can we reach your corner of Orchard Hill?

Being a coastal area, Orchard Hill gets a routine call, while the villages nearby come along on that same journey: Raleigh Estate and Bideford, Southcott and East-the-Water, Silford.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Devon, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. On a border, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us to enquire rather than guessing.

The map shows the patch the page spans. Every bit of it is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped by the kerbside anywhere around Orchard Hill?

Not everyone gets a decent spot to pull in. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Orchard Rise, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a routine call for us instead of a rare one.

Sit by the car if it's sensible to sit there, but clear of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. A technician coming to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 50 miles out of Orchard Hill, the local M5 is what matters now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't restart it to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Orchard Hill itself

Orchard Hill is a coastal locality in Devon, situated near the towns of Bideford and Southcott, with Raleigh Estate to the east. Orchard Hill has a population of around 952 people, living in predominantly terraced housing. Orchard Hill is relatively low-lying, with an elevation of approximately 5 metres above sea level, and is located near the South West coast of England. Orchard Hill is about 36 miles from Exeter, the nearest city, and some 179 miles from London.

When our technicians reach you in Orchard Hill: what follows

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • The tank gets drained of everything.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's left in the fuel system is not what created the problem.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • After it's fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Orchard Hill AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

The fault is not the same, though the first step is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Orchard Hill page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Orchard Hill

One number would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Orchard Hill

I am on a forecourt in Orchard Hill. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work gets done. Our technicians attend Texaco and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. It is salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
